Subaru beats BMW 3-series AND Lexus in magazine comparo?



Man, times they are a changing.

In the current Road and Track magazine there is an AWD sport sedan shootout and in the final standings, the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT beat the BMW 325xi and the Lexus IS250AWD!

And in case you're wondering, the Audi A4 won the overall crown.

Someone put a WRX against a 5 series and the WRX won. It be intersting to see how much value and price accounted for in the test results. Subaru makes great cars, but I'd still pay more for a 3 or IS.

Of course Subaru and Audi should win this competition....it was a contest of the AWD vehicles....It would be sad if the pioneers of this fabulous technology lost to newcomers in the AWD field like Lexus or BMW....

I've owned a WRX, and now drive a 330Ci. I can tell you that the AWD system in the WRX sucks. It's there, but it is NOT designed for performance. In fact, the transfer of power is so slow, and so noticeable, it can cause you to wipe out. <-- I speak from experience.

By the time your AWD kicks in on the Subaru, you had BETTER be correcting, or you're a goner. And when you are already correcting, the AWD kicks in and really makes things terrifying b/c at that point you're way OVERcorrecting. I HATE it and will never drive another one.

A truly great AWD system is one that is not noticed by the driver. Think Audi's Quattro. Of all the Quattros I've driven hard, I've never, ever felt the AWD "kick in". It's just there, and very predictable in the way it handles.

The Subaru system is a novelty in comparison.

What a car,really what a great car and value for money.
It's stylish and sleek design,leading AWD system,Boxer engine,Turbos,ride,handling,tough,rock solid,high Quality meterials,fit and finish,max options and features,leading sound system,...etc are all top of the world.
IT'S LIKE ALL THE EXCELLENCE ARE COMBINED TOGETHER IN THIS CAR.

(IN THIS UPPER CATEGORY ALSO SUBARU IS DOING REMARKBLY AND BEATED ALMOST EVERY OF THEM)
AND NOW I AM ASSUMING THAT NEWER GENERATION OF SUBARU WILL CHALLENGE THE 5 SERIES,A6,ES/GS.
AND IT'S ALSO POSSIBLE,DON'T DOUBT SUBARU'S CAPACITIES/CAPABILITIES.

I saw the review, and I think they did a great job ranking the cars. The Subaru would have placed first it the rankings included price. The 2.5 GT, as reviewed on autoweek, does 0-60 in about 5.3 seconds.

Also, the Subaru aced the IIHS saftey testing, winning the "Gold" award. (the highest, shared w/ the Saab 93, Honda Civic, and Ford Five-Hundred) A safe, fast, reliable, comforable, all season sport sedan for $21,000?* That's a great deal.**

*Legacy 2.5i $21,695=175 hp~~2.5GT:$28,795=250 hp
**BMW 325xi sedan: $32,800=215 hp.
**Lexus is250 AWD:$34,875=204 hp

...In my own personal opinion nobody's making cars, within the price range of course, as good as Audi. The build quality is amazing, even their older models still look good...they don't age as quickly as other makers vehicles and they perform well as well. I'd easily take the facelifted A4 over any of it's competitors, even the newer 3-series and IS. Not that they're bad cars, from far in fact. But for my money Audi delivers. they're also fantastic with after sales service. Way better than BMW.

The 3-Series is borderline ugly, with that peculiar Korean-inspired rear end on it. Fancy features aside, it's not hard to see why anyone whose heart beats faster when they see a beautiful car would hand the trophy to something more appealing.

And still, BMW can't make these damned cars fast enough. It's a strange old world.

Audi won ... not a surprise

Subaru beat out BMW, Lexus and Infiniti ... after all their investment in Rally Competition, they better have something to show for

BMW, Lexus and Infiniti ... their AWD systems are nothing but a marketing tool to get the AWD market. Call it whatever fancy name you want to call your AWD system, it will still be a wanna-be quattro.

The 06 Legacy does not have stability control of any kind available. I e-mailed Subaru of America about this, and they replied that AWD provides the same benefits.The top of the line Outback has it standard. Some people w/ LGT's say you can slide out the rear end bedore AWD kicks in. For a $30,000 sport sedan, it should have Stability Control STANDARD. I hope the 07 gets it with some more upscale features like bi-xenon headlights, bluetooth, with a better audio system.
