2009 Holiday Gifts-If You Had An Extra $200k, Would THIS be Your Timepiece?

2009 Holiday Gifts-If You Had An Extra $200k, Would THIS be Your Timepiece?
If you know anything about watches, you know the Tourbillon is the Enzo Ferrari of timepieces.

In horology, a tourbillon or tourbillion (pronounced /t??r'b?lj?n/, French: [tu?bij?~], "whirlwind") is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement. Invented in 1795 by Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, a tourbillon counters the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, ostensibly in order to negate the effect of gravity when the timepiece (and thus the escapement) is rotated. Originally an attempt to improve accuracy, tourbillons are still included in some expensive modern watches as a novelty and demonstration of watchmaking virtuosity. The mechanism is usually exposed on the watch's face to show it off.

As with all Bell & Ross watches, the BR MINUTEUR TOURBILLON PINK GOLD is first and foremost a measuring tool, focusing on readability, functionality, accuracy and reliability. Stemming from a desire to fit a timer function with independent reading to a high precision mechanism, it incorporates four watchmaking complications around a main timepiece. The combination of functionality and mechanical sophistication is what makes this watch unique. With the BR MINUTEUR TOURBILLON PINK GOLD, Bell & Ross has gone far
beyond the traditional know-how of fine watchmaking to create the instrument of the future.

This watch is limited to 30 pieces and the MSRP is $200,000 USD.

I'm sure you wouldn't think it was so ridiculous if you could afford it. Friends who would shun you for buying a nice watch are called jealous.

If you would become a famous athlete or actor you would have the money to buy a nice IWC watch. IWC means International Watch Company and they're made in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Sure ;)

I think a good watch for you would be a Zenith Defy Classic. Check out the link.

Only somebody with more money than sense would spend 200k on this hideous timepiece.

1995e34 there are lots of very expensive timepieces that are not flash. The price is usually based on Exclusivity or Complication. For example, if i had the means i would purchase the Circus Minute Repeater from Ulysse Nardin $360,000 + and not a single Diamond in it.

Most of the people wo can afford these things already give more to charity in one month than regular folk do in their lifetimes. It is also very easy to say what you would do if you had the funds available, Things change when you finally have it.

You don't know anything about fine Swiss watches because youre a Dembo.

These type of things go against everything you believe in including cars that get no better than 40 miles to the gallon.

1995...your socialist rhetoric is getting old...stop trying to convince people that they should give up what they earned for their hard work. If you dont like how much money you make, work harder. It's America, the only one standing in your way is yourself.

It angers me just as much as you that douchebags make millions, but it's based on supply & demand. It's sick that Tiger Woods make all the money he does, but can you golf like Tiger? If thousands could, he wouldnt make the money he does. I don't like I have to elaborate, I trust you understand this simple concept.

The second half is motivation. Humans are motivated by money and sex (after the basics for survival have been met). You take away the rewards that motivate people and they won't be as innovative. Then society truly suffers.

Lastly, socialism, while you may think distributes the wealth to society, actually puts even fewer people at the top with more control (the government basically owns you) and with resources/benefits that the common man will never have access to, no matter how hard he works. I don't want to live in that world.

But you have to remember, collectors buy these and 10 years from now if the economy gets normal again, they could sell for $1m or more.

Bell & Ross mey be a new brand out of Switzerland, but they certainly are not junk watches.

001, How about Audemars Piguet watches? They make Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shaquille O'Neal signature watches.

Panerai make a Sylvester Stallone signature watch, and Panerai makes all the Ferrari watches.

Blancpain are making the expensive Lamborghini watches.

Parmigiani Fleurier makes a $470,000 Bugatti watch and they willmake the new clock/watch for the upcoming 4 door Bugatti.

How about less expensive Oris watches and all the race car drivers they have as ambassadors? Oris is famous for their red rotors.

204E60,

I think you're wrong.

I agree that most B&R's are not Patek's but they are a lot less expensive and they are a brand much higher on the rise than just about anyone out there.

Just go on Canal Street or Beijing, Shanghai and see what fakes they are selling...They are now flooded with B&R's and 4 years ago, you wouldn't have found one.

They make an excellent product but i also own Panerai, Rolex, Patek and a few others...

We have quite a few readers from timezone.com here and they will tell you, watch people like many brands and have extensive collections.

By the way, Im currently wearing the BR03-51 GMT Titanium Carbon Fiber and i LOVE it!.

Since I'm a watch whore I would probably do it. Although that would be after a few more Movado's, and some Rolex pieces. I'm still loving my most recent Tag though, just an Aquaracer but still catches eyes.

Bell & Ross is not a brand that holds a lot of esteem of watch fans. If not a historical brand like Patek, JLC, or AP, someone buying a watch with that kind of bucks would blow $200k on a modern but technologically superlative boutique brand like Richard Mille.

Youre saying a Tourbillon (and there is only one "i" in the word) is so 2007???

I subscribe to two watch magazines (iW and Watch Time) and every issue is full of these type of watches.

Check out the Chopard watches. Tey have three new Tourbillon that range in price from $141k to $170k and that are works of art. Elton John has a signature line of watches with them.

Waste of money.

My watch cost $400. It's an ESQ, which is Swiss made. I get lots of compliments on it from coworkers who wear 10k rolexes. I think $400 is plenty to spend on a watch. I'd go as high as $1,000. No precious metals for me.

I happen to be of a like mind to 204E60, the only watch in my mind that is worth $200,000 is a Patek Phillipe. Specifically if I had $200,000 or so I would get a Patek Phillipe Celestial Calendar- although depending on which one you would actually need closer to $250,000

http://www.gemnation.com/watches/Patek-Philippe-Celestial-5102PR-15764.html

I quote; "Looking at the dial you can tell what the sky (position) of the stars looks like as well as the phase of the moon and the position of the moon in the night sky. This tells you the solar time, the passage of Sirius, what is going on with the moon, and shows you a nice sky chart."

1995E34,

You are confusing "flashy" and "expensive". Something expensive is not necessarily flashy. Everyone here knows that your visceral attitude in this matter has nothing to do with your aesthetic sensibilities, it has instead to do with your emotions when confronted with what others spend their money on. You are entirely too transparent and predictable.

If you want flashy this should really infuriate you:

About 3 weeks ago I was one of about 30 people who was invited to a private party hosted by Piaget and Neiman Marcus at the Ritz Carlton in Denver. I tried on a $1.2 million watch that was paved in 60 carats worth of diamonds. In the dim light of the Presidental Suite, it wasn't really that special feeling or looking, it may as well have been paved in Swarovski crystal for all it mattered there. Direct Sunlight might be a different matter.

I always love reading comments “I would give the money to charity”, or “I would use the money to improve humanity”. They all make the same inane conclusion, these people don’t donate anything they just spend it all on watches, they could not be more wrong. Having sold premium watches (Ulysse Nardin, Zenith, ChronoSwiss and Bell & Ross to name a few), I can tell you from actually knowing these people they are usually noted for there philanthropy giving money to a variety of charities.

Haute horology is a passion just like cars, works of art, or expensive wine. I never read on these blogs when Ferrari introduce a new exotic that those buying should been spending that money on charity or the new Lexus LF-A should never have been made because the money could have improved society. In almost all cases the purchasers of the luxury goods contribute quantum levels more than those whining about how wealthy the should spend the money they earned.
