Ford's Bringin' It Back -- The 5.0 Returns, Beefier AND Angrier

Ford's Bringin' It Back -- The 5.0 Returns, Beefier AND Angrier
Well, so much for the press embargo and waiver we all signed.

Since a loose-lipped attendee could not keep their mouth shut, it has hit the interweb that Ford is resurrecting the beloved 5.0 Mustang. I can confirm this as I attended the Detroit event today and believe me, there is more than what is being reported. So, if you are a Mustang fan, you're in for a very good 2011.

We proudly give Ford a standing ovation for such a bold move but I have to ask:

What took so long?

Because I am not looking to get sued, I will tread lightly as are the other publications.

The new 5.0L unit will be pumping out 412-horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

Woof! Having driven all three of Detroit's latest muscle, the 2010 GT 'Stang is already a handful. Giving a substantial 100 + horsepower increase will certainly up the ante against the competition; however, it still has not sold as strongly as the Camaro.

Regardless, we at AutoSpies are very excited to drive the 2011 when it makes its official debut.

Damn Id love to treat you like a real whore and pimp slap the sh*t out of you. You do NOT speak for all people, if YOU have moved on, then do so, you won't be missed. Otherwise sit there and stfu and speak when you're spoken to, lil boy.

Tell that to Ford and the crowd of 100 or journalists that were VERY excited when it was all announced.

If you cannot say something nice, shouldn't say anything at all.

I VERY RARELY agree with Badgewhore but on this issue he is is 100% correct.

The rest of the world knows there is an Ironic sort of Blind Loyalty that actually does more harm than good to the NA Auto Manufacturers.

US Auto Journalists are totally in the pockets of Manufacturers and their MArketing Companies so real Critique is Non-Existent, A few well known people Plug the Flash Loud new car at a Press Launch with much fanfare and then it wait for the next Loud Flash new car, not realising that vast majority of buyers need Good, Regular cars.

Like i said in a previous Post. German Cars sell well even with a Higher Sale Price because they do the ordinary stuff without much fuss, Then when you require MAdness, it also delivers.

This is weird, I find Toyota buyers/followers to have the greatest blind loyalty. And look where that got Toyota. 4+ million recalls later.

Haha! I wish I got paid to mindlessly trash Toyota's! But seriously, I used to have respect for Toyota... then they decided to ditch all of their sports cars... and then all of their sporty cars... all that's left is their trucks... for now at least.

Wait... so I'm supposed to appreciate them because they chose to focus on large volume production cars instead of cars I enjoy?

You are right! Those are all cool interesting vehicles I would consider purchasing when I get out of university. And you know what, they aren't all money losing ventures either. You know what still isn't a money gaining venture? The Prius, $20 billion down the hole and maybe $5 billion in profits so far (between prius's sold and trickled down tech). Imagine the awesome sports car they could have made in its place, and if they sold it at a price that would lose toyota as much money as the prius has yet to get back it would be a hella cheap awesome car. But alas they'd rather lose money investing in green tech so that it's easier to move econo boxes. Yawwn. Toyota doesn't have to please me, they can continue going on their path of boringness just like every other appliance manufacturer.

Sweet. Is it NA? Its spec is better both than 2UR-GSE and VK50VE, which is not easy. 7500rpm?

Now that they get the engine right, time to fix suspension?

Judging from how close the 412hp is to the 390ft-lbs, I would doubt the engine revs to 7500rpm. Since 5252rpm is where hp=ft-lbs, I would make the educated guess that the red line is 6000rpm. An average number that should provide decent fuel economy and excellent engine life.

The trick lies in the fact that I said decent fuel economy and not good fuel economy. aka 25mpg.

it's too bad they didn't put more work into the styling of the car. that's why the camero sells better. the mustang is a bit too retro in my opinion. gm really did a good job with the camero, though i could do without the 4 gauge cluster in the SS1 and SS2.

My first car was a 1990 Green Mustang convertible with white interior with a 5.0 V8....It was awesome.
I have been recently thinking about getting another stang just for kicks. I love the interior and exterior especailly the glass roof option. I will wait for the 2011 model

The problem with the Camaro is this. It is great to look at but not great to sit in. The Mustang to me seems like it would be more satisfying to own. Like it or not you drive it while sitting in the car then outside the car. To me not being able to see well while driving a car would grate on me over time. With this 5.0 the Stang will now eat an SS on the straights and will still out handle it as it does now. So yes the Camaro has a nicer side profile but the the Stang still will sound better,go better, handle better and be a littel more practical to own. More then a fair trade off for me.

The SS camaro is neck and neck with the GT500 as far as performance goes... I am talking both quarter mile times and laguna seca times, I don't think the mustang gt with a 5.0 can keep up with it. If you are to choose between the Mustang Gt and a V6 camaro, I would say the choice would end up between a nicer looking interior or a nicer looking exterior.

Here is a list of v8 powered cars that get about 25mpg on the highway.

Hyundai Genesis @ 25mpg hwy and 375hp
Lexus GS 460 @ 24mpg hwy and 342hp
Lexus LS 460 @ 24mpg hwy and 380hp
Corvette C6 @ 26mpg hwy and 430hp
Corvette Z06 @ 24mpg hwy and 505hp
Camaro SS @ 25mpg hwy and 426hp
Chrysler 300 @ 25mpg hwy and 360hp
Dodge Challenger @ 25mpg hwy and 372hp
Dodge Charger @ 25mpg hwy and 368hp
Jaguar XF @ 25mpg hwy and 300hp
Jaguar XK @ 24mpg hwy and 385hp
Mercedes E550 @ 24mpg hwy and 382hp
Audi A6 @ 23mpg hwy and 350hp
Audi A8 @ 23mpg hwy and 350hp

It appears the only people able to make over 400hp+ and still maintain 25+mpg hwy is Chevrolet. I guess you might be right, but if this engine lives up to its hype then it will be competing with Chevy.

Those are epa numbers Badgewhore, meaning not only can they get those numbers, but they can exceed them as well.

Also, ford's eco tech team has been regularly updating engines providing them with both increased power and fuel economy. This mixed with the fact that the weight of a car has no effect on highway fuel economy means that a 25mpg 400+hp mustang is achievable. Too bad Toyota can't do the same *shrugs* it woulda been nice to see more competition in this area, especially since Toyota seems to pride themselves on fuel economy... which in comparisons is pretty well on par with everyone else lol.
