Sales Shockers - Who Is Actually Moving The Metal And Who Is Watching It Rust On the Lot?

Sales Shockers - Who Is Actually Moving The Metal And Who Is Watching It Rust On the Lot?
I was reading through the responses from 001's story earlier today about why cars aren't selling.  Was it pricing, selection or other factors.  In reading the responses to the post it became abundantly clear that most of us have no clue what the volume at an average dealership is.

If you think the average dealership will just sell to the next Joe that walks in off the street, you may be in for a shock.  You could be the only Joe that month!

Let me pass on a few facts of the average dealership sales for the month of November:

Did you know the average Aston Martin franchise sold more cars in November than the average SAAB, or Hummer franchise?

How about the average VW franchise out selling the average Chevrolet franchise, or even a Mini franchises outselling Ford?

Crazy facts?  Probably so, but they are the truth as we see it today, and sometimes reality is scarier than fiction.

But one thing is for sure, if you sold a large number of SUV's before the recession and had a comprehensive automotive lineup to back you up, you probably saw your buyers move over to buy smaller cars instead.  However if you failed to read the writing on the wall, and primarily sold SUV's then your sales went elsewhere.  Looking back two years ago you can see a marked trend from thirsty SUV's to somewhat more economical vehicles.

But enough of the trends, take a look at the good and bad and prepare yourself for just how low the U.S. market has sunken, and tell us the shockers and the surprises you see.

Interesting but not very helpful. What would be more valuable would be the national sales figures (less any fleet). Where can we see those numbers?

Why again is GM saving Buick? This is a great list to justify the slashing of GM's dealers. I hope the arbitrators have this in hand during negotiations.

I remmber reading these lists 10-15 years ago when Saturn consistently was number 1 in sales per dealer, some 60-70 cars per month. Toyota and Honda have always remained near the top since those days in the mid 90s. (I think Toyota was always right behind Saturn.)

Last month, China actually surpassed the USA in car sales. China has become the largest automobile market in the world. Buick is HUGE in China. That's why GM is saving Buick.

Not a good comparison, there are MANY more Chevrolet dealers than TOYOTA dealers for one example.

I believe this is average sales per franchise...

true. chart would be far more informative if it also listed the number of dealers for each brand.

that said, it is obvious toyota and lexus have the SMARTEST set up. less dealers having to compete with cross town rivals. MORE SALES and PROFITS for ALL their dealers. and hopefully this = better servicing of the customers (altho' of course, no guarantees!)

it is also the reason toyota and lexus dealerships trade hands at far higher prices. up to $100,000,000 for one lexus store.

Hmmm... These numbers are biased against brands with multiple divisions. With that being said, why is Toyota and Scion slapped together?

bescause people want to see Toyota succeed and look good, even though they sell us cheap poorly engineered products with MAJOR hidden recalls, and faults.
Just rememeber all the profit goes overseas people just like your jobs

fatandsassy- Last time I looked, my paycheck goes to my bank account here in the USA.... As far as profits from selling the actual vehicle's, gather your fact. Toyota/Lexus has spent alomst double the amount of money right here in the USA on R&D as well as several other products. Hell, they basically have their own little "town" in CA called Toyota City!!

So before you cry about the same BS that you lost a job or money is going overseas, bitch about the fact the UAW is too strong for it's own good, most UAW workers are overpaid for what they do and really don't do and that the USA brands are now after getting their asses handed to them for how many years by building garbage, building a better vehicle's?

Until then, I'll gladly support Toyota/Lexus and watch them grow stronger and better !!! By the way, before I hear "how much money" Toyota lost, remember they still have 10 times that in the bank as RESERVE !!

And all you German Brand fans, thought you were going to kick Lexus out of the ball park this years and out sell them, acording to the number's Ive seen, your almost halfway there!!

"Did you know the average Aston Martin franchise sold more cars in November than the average SAAB, or Hummer franchise?"

and just as much as average Buick, pontiac, and mercury stores too!

Number of dealers is staggered so the fact that one Aston dealer sold more than say 5 Saab dealers makes it skewed. It is the only Aston dealer within a few hundred miles probably. That aside, who keeps putting photoshops of exotic cars covered in dust? It is getting tiresome to see these (left behind in Arabia) pictures popping up. Especially when they are irrelevant to the article. If you want to show figures and talk of franchises, show pictures of full dealer lots, and spreadsheets.

WOW Ferrari selling 4 cars a month...that is a over a million dollars a month in revenue and about 30-35k per car in profit that is 120-140 dollars a month in profits! This does not count the used cars which they sell 2 times as many as new ones!!!

"I only care about the Ferrari's"

UAW- THe UAW worker makes way more then a factory assembly worker lets say at a Paper Shredding company makes. ANd why is that? Is the shredder not as important to make sure it works and is built right? Hell, most of the work you do is a joke, and most UAW workers know it!!! Hell, a monkey can do your work with training. I've been to SEVERAL plants and seen the workers. If your bitching your underpaid, consider all your benefits, your holiday pay's, employee discounts, and your overpaid hourly wages !!!

I've been in the business for several years and have a degree in Automotive Technology.

japanese autoworkers earn more because they are MORE PRODUCTIVE. takes them far fewer man hours per car. (true even in american plants with american workers.)

but along with more efficient plants, they do not have PARASITIC CEOs making outrageous salaries whether the company is profitable or not.

japanese CEOs rarely if ever make 100x what a line worker does. compare that with american CEOs who often make 400x or more.
