GENEVA MOTOR SHOW PREVIEW: SPYSHOTS- Next BMW M5 To Tear EVERYTHING To Shreds?
While we're all enjoying a great Christmas holiday the mad scientists in Munich are plotting their next moves.

The hotly anticipated M5 will debut about a year after the standard 5-Series that is due to make its first public appearance at the 2010 Geneva Show next March.

Until recently, it wasn't clear if the new M5 would continue to use the current model's exotic V10 powerplant or if the Bavarian's would go for the new 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 that debuted in the X5M and X6M. However, BMW officials have now confirmed that the new M5 will indeed be equipped with the turbocharged V8.

It will be interesting to see how this new BMW M5 goes head to head to the Cadillac CTS-V. Either way the Cadillac is still cost probably half as much and had the performance to run with the big boy. I wonder if this new M5 can beat the Cadillac CTS-V on the famous German track.

I am kinda glad they are putting twin turbos in the new M5 because now the torque pretty much matches the horepower which is a plus in my book. I am a torque guy all the way I will take torque over horespower any day but its also great to have that perfect balance between hp/torque to give you the sports car that launces with great power and the power stays steady throughout the run. I think BMW will accomplish this with the new M5.

no oo1, the next M5 will not tear everything to shreds. it should be impressive but, not as much as you're misleading title suggests

Exactly.

How it would "rip to shreds" a TT V10 RS6 with 572+ BHP and AWD i would love to know.

well seeing as it takes a twin turbo V10 with almost 600hp just for the RS6 to compete with the 500hp current M5, and still lose out in dynamics it certainly is no stretch of the imagination to the think the new M5 will our perform the RS6..........., the CTS-V regardless will still be the one to beat as it offers alot of the performance of the europeans at the cost of their entry level high performance sedans if not cheaper in some cases. The M5 will certainly be the benchmark with price not being a factor it always has been, I seriously doubt BMW will screw the next generation up, not to metion with the X6 running in test 4.3 seconds to 60 and weighing how much more than the 5 series the M5 will certainly be faster...

It is certainly the most accurate anaolgy for your imagined M5 going head against your imagination of the competition. The M5 is two years out but I am sure you know how this unfinished car will stack up against cars you likely haven't driven.

Hmmm,........with 570HP on tap and likely 530torque what makes you think it won't shred any sedan on the planet? Expect a 0-60 of 3.4-3.5 sec's (that's the same as an Enzo btw) coupled with everything you'd expect from the flagship M. And you want to compare it to any kind of Caddy? As "Bones" McCoy would say- "Are you out of your Vulcan mind!?"

Granted I'm not a huge Bimmer fan, but the new M5er will easily be King of the Hill for a while with that kind of power/torque.........

no way. the new M5 will not reach in the low or mid 3 second range. maybe in the high 3s to low 4s like the current M3. the new M5 will probably be more impressive showing off its new technological features than its capabilities on the road.

The current M5 produces 500 HP/383 ft lbs and weighs 4012 lbs., does 0-60 in 4.7 seconds (Edmunds) The 2010 CTS-V produces 556 HP/551 ft lbs and weighs 4255, does 0-60 in 4.3 (Edmunds again).

The new M5 will be competitive and will most likely be faster than the competition but others cars like the CTS-V will still be in competition with it. Don;t ignore the Caddy, it's become a world class automobile at a bargain price.

BMW will underrate the 0-60 time as they always do and will release it at 4.3 seconds, or very close to that. So, it will be a 3.9 or 4 flat 0-60 time, of course with the turbos, it depends where you are driving it (altitude, humidity, etc). Tearing anything to shreds is not possible in todays market, but it will still be the leader in the segment.

There is no doubt the biggest selling point they will stress when it is launched is that it outperforms the V10 with a Twin-Turbo 8.

Bet on it.

It’s difficult to believe that anyone would think the twin-turbocharged V10 Audi RS6 would need anymore power but it looks to be on the cards. Audi are not averse to tinkering with their RS line-up and the previous generation RS6 came in for some fettling during its dying days with the introduction of an RS6 ‘Plus’. The plus equated to an increase in power from 335kW/450hp to 358kW/480hp – not bad.

But it gets better with the current generation RS6. According to AutoTelegraaf, an Audi snitch has confirmed that Audi look set to bump the power up for another ‘Plus’ version. Already sporting a massive 432kW/580hp in standard tune, the ‘Plus’ will likely come packing 457kW/613hp worth of heat. Surely that has to be enough?

Until the new BMW M5 is release and when get an official spec for both the New BMW M5 and Audi RS6 the Cadillac CTS-V is King is the super sport car sedan in this segment. And hold the title the faster sport sedan that ever run on the Famous German track.

That is just the true. Yeah when the new M5 come out it will beat the Cadillac CTS-V, yeah right. Cadillac can release a more powerful version as well. Cadillac have offer a sport sedan that handle and performance like a Ferrari or Lambo and cost way less than it competitor. Unreal.......

Good job Cadillac. Now hurry and release the Cadillac CTS/CTS-V coupe and show BMW, Audi, and MB what you can do.

Again and Again..I am an MB fan but the new M5 will be the new king in power, torque and performace...at least til MB bring the new 5.5 Twin Turbo AMG to the streets to replace the 6.2 AMG V8 the next year too.

Haven't Audi mentioned during the release of RS6 that they won't go higher than current power outputs (580BHP). AMG also said something similar that now they will work on more fuel efficient engines and are out of the horsepower war.
I think all cars in this segment will settle around 580 to 600 BHP mark for at least one generation.

AMG's are hardly king of anything; the closest they manage is perhaps king of stoplight races, being the one trick ponies they are.
