What Were 2009's Top Ten Sellers? Clue: 001 Owns The Number One
A severe recession. A credit crisis. Government bailouts. Unprecedented bankruptcies. Storied brands killed. Dealerships dumped. Cash for Clunkers. Moderating gas prices. Scary recalls by trusted brands. Innovative marketing by up-and-comers.

It all added up to wild fluctuations in auto sales and unusual shifts in market share. Final sales tallies for 2009 won't be reported till Jan. 5, but the year's trends are clear. U.S. car and light truck sales are expected to total approximately 10.4 million units, the lowest since 1970. For most of the last decade, the industry sold around 16 million new vehicles per year.

Here are the top ten sellers for 2009 in order

1. Ford F-Series Pickup
2. Toyota Camry/Solara
3. Chevrolet Silverado
4. Toyota Corolla/Matrix
5. Honda Accord
6. Nissan Altima
7. Ford Escape
8. Honda CR-V
9. Ford Fusion
10. Honda Civic

What is it about Ford F-Series Pickup that does it for Americans?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad car....just wondering.

fat americans love them gas gussling machines. need that extra torque to lug them around. texas mickie in one hand and a bucket of fried chicken in the other cruising down the highways. either a hill billy or a texas redneck.

Americans like the F150 and trucks in general because they're the last vehicle they'll ever own. Trucks do everything. You can tow, carry, go through snow and mud, take long trips in comfort because of the interior space; they're the most well-rounded vehicles on the road. The only real downside with trucks is the initial cost.

What is it about people making gross assumptions, commercial sales ever cross your mind???? regardless of the gas situation business owners still need trucks, another reason why some other cars are on the list "fleet sales." Its always so refreshing hearing ignorrant comments that people find so profound lol....are you kidding me

You couldn't have been more wrong. Please read the WorldofLuxury very smart remark.

There are NO SUVS in the Top 10!

These are SUVs that compensate insecurities, not workhorse trucks that pickups actually are. The shift from SUVs towards more fuel efficient cars, most of them particularly light and efficient (Civic, Corolla) couldn't have been more pronounced than by this Top 10.

Uh, maybe because all construction sites use pickup trucks. And if you hadn't noticed, in America we build a lot of stuff.

In America, we have plenty of land to build and continue to do so. The trucks are used for construction. A small mind you have. I suppose I could generalize Europeans just as easily. Although such anger typically stems from jealously, which you apparently suffer from greatly.

While you believe that a truck is impractical, it is in fact the opposite of that. I'll refrain from lashing out at your unapprised comments.

Milton talk to Mr. Lumberg! But in all serious the F-150 has the strongest frame and gives you 3/4 ton capabilities in a half ton truck, it is also reliable and has an indestructible build quality around the suspension and frame....so they don't have the best motor, but it is the most reliable work horse in the group with the most steal around you. So people like them, they ride nice too, and have a lot of different configurations to suite many people from all walks of life. The number 1 vehicle for a millionare is still an F-150 not a Ferrari in the USA.

Yay! Trucks are still up there! Sigh... all the SUVs are gone... I really miss those few years when I finally noticed that there were a quite a few Camrys and Accords, but the roads consisted many of Suburbans, Tahoes, Yukons (XLs), Escalades, ESVs, EXTs, Expeditions, and Excursions. Those glorious days. No squishing. No cramping. No feeling of vulnerability.

The only thing that keeps a smile on my face is the fact that extremely small vehicles are also taking a hard hit. :)

whats even more interesting to me is that the Altima and Fusion have moved up while the Civic has moved down..a lot..weren't they like 6th overall at one time.

The Civic really has a lot of competition and is on an aging chassis not as good as a lot of other cars people can buy.

Pennfootball's spelling is fine..sentence construction now that's another story!!

But I digress from the topic at hand...Pick ups are as American as the stagecoach...They represent freedom and the ability to make something from nothing..Imagine someone said that a Ford is a status symbol! Wow..it is! That's why so many people buy them, for construction or otherwise..I don't own one and never would because I live in the city but they are great cars as evidenced by how long they've been No.1..

I saw another list which was virtually identical to this one, except that they tallied the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra as a single model (which they should, as the two are mechanically identical) done this way, the Silverado/Sierra GM pickups outsell the Camry and the Ford F-150, the GM pickup is the real #1 best-seller, it always has been.

I own the number 2, the great Toyota Camry.
Because Toyota never makes mistakes, unlike the big 2.
My Toyota came with a floor mounted gas pedal, which was immune to that stuck gas pedal nonsense the media made up.
My Camry was perfect, a creation of god. Dressed in the finest leather ever bestowed upon an automobile. There is no better vehicle on Earth than the Toyota Camry. Mine gets 35 miles per gallon.

I do admit, only the Ford F-150 is a better car.

"the finest leather ever" you are an idiot and apparently have no idea what fine leather feel like. I am sure you are on of those ignorant people that purchase items from street vendors instead of actual stores because that man in the coat has rolex watches and fine leather goods.
Sorry to be so blunt but I can not stand to see Toyota be put on a pedestal. They are cheap cars and the media does not make up recalls. You are only trying to make yourself feel comfortable about driving a cheap car. Enjoy your vehicle!

3.Chevorlet Silverado

Shocked the impala is off the list. Typically the police fleet alone puts it on the list. I guess that is a sign of the times. Cities are cutting back. Does anyone know the avg life cycle for police fleet?

I think the Impala comes up on a different list... there is also a top selling 'cars' list, which doesn't count the trucks like this best selling 'vehicles' list does. If you take out the pickup trucks, I'm pretty sure the Impala would show up at #8, 9, or 10.

why does owning a pickup truck make a person a hick? maybe it's not their only vehicle, maybe they own a business, maybe they plow snow for their neighbors in the winter, or haul horses/dirtbikes/racecars for weekend activities... the pickup truck is a very useful vehicle, it does things that cars simply can't, that's why they continue to sell.

Stop with the ignorance on the F150. If you havent actually driven one, recently, then you cannot make judgements. I owned one and it was an awesome truck. If I ever buy a truck again, it will be an F150. The handling, steering, braking, sound system, comfort and excellent 4wd system. cannot go wrong.
