Long Term Review Update: 2009 BMW 7-The Gift That Keeps On Giving?

Long Term Review Update: 2009 BMW 7-The Gift That Keeps On Giving?
Back in February, the Spies got handed the keys to the all new BMW 7-Series to go into the long term review fleet.

I was especially excited to get this car and BMW couldn't have chosen a better candidate to test it because I was an actual owner of an 02, 03 AND 04 745li.

It was to this day the only car I've EVER bought that I didn't like the look of but it drove so nice (when it worked), I threw down the big bucks.

As you know the last 7 was hampered by one of the worst electrical systems ever on a car and the first generation iDrive system which in principle was groundbreaking and brilliant but the initial software interface made MS-DOS 1.0 look elegant.

I like many other owners were extremely frustrated because our cars were in the shop too many times to mention.

But the good news was that BMW made things right with the customers affected and I applaud them for that.

What they did for owners would NEVER happen with many other brands.

So the most important question on my mind when I knew the delivery day was nearing was... Have they exorcized all the gremlins or would it be another case of a great driving car with headache after headache?

I can wholeheartedly say after driving it for almost ten months now the answer is YES.

Ding Dong, the wicked witch is DEAD!

EVERY SINGLE ISSUE on the old car have been remedied and improved on the all new car.

And what a car it is!

Right now it has about 13K miles on the odometer.

If you think the 6-cylinder 335 is great (and it is), then your head will swivel 360 like Linda Blair in the Exorcist when you push this pedal to the floor.

It is without question, the finest 8 cylinder put in a mainstream luxury sedan in my lifetime.

ZERO turbo lag.

But what you will notice besides the flawless power delivery is the how the suspension reacts to whatever you throw at it.

It is a the automotive equivalent of a religious experience

It drives light and small...the best way to describe it is like a more luxurious M5.

It never feels boat-like or sloppy like some OTHER cars it runs against.

There is NEVER any drama...it never feels like it is outside of its comfort zone at any speed.

Some cars you get tired of driving.

Not this one.

And where is was the most deficient in the past generation, like in areas of navigation and man/machine interface, it is now the gold standard.

For so many years Lexus KILLED the Germans in nav systems but no more.

One drive looking at the high-def quality extra wide nav screen and you're done with the Japanese equivalents.

The topographical maps, little things like alerting you to fog on the road (yes, no kidding,,,it shows grey lines along the road in foggy areas!) will never cease to impress you in the experience and elegance of implementation.

Add to that, the best seats on earth (with massage if you like), acres of cabin space especially in back, wonderful sound, great bluetooth performance/sound, the best heads up display on any car, every state of the art safety system known to man and my favorite, the BEST active cruise system that includes stop and go capability.

Going to be stuck in wicked traffic for an hour?

No worries, hit the cruise button and the car DRIVES ITSELF!

REALLY.

And there couldn't be a better place to be coddled inside while you're stuck in the river of steel

Think of the best 5-star hotel and thats what it feels like inside.

Doesn't it look just AWESOME in the Black Sapphire?

And I also think the two-tone interior is absolutely perfect.

OK, 001, there have to be SOME negatives, right.

Well, yes.

There has never been a perfect car and I don't think there ever will be.

But this is MIGHTY close.

Here's what you won't like...

The comfort access system is REALLY finicky compared to other BMW's.

You have to touch the door handles two to three times before it locks most times which is a pain.

I'm not 100% sold on the rear 3/4 look.

If you're a big guy like me, the front door entries are tight...you need to crouch then go sideways so you don't hit your head...if you have back issues, you'll be booking more time with the chiropractor

I wish the center console had more storage space and lastly gas mileage is 2mpg LESS than I was getting on my last 7's.

The added electronic systems weight hamper that I'm told, but you won't care when you drive it.

You'll be too delighted.

Other issues:  It has run flats and my tire pressure warning light lit up saying to add air and I was 51 miles from the nearest gas station and these run flats are good for around 40 miles (see photos).

Hence, I had to spend two nights in Central California because it happened on a Sunday and the BMW assist tow truck doesn't have run flat spares on it.

And then when I went to the dealer in San Luis Obispo the next day, they don't stock them so it was another overnight waiting for the tire to get fedexed in.

The good news was I spent two nights in Paso Robles eating great food and drinking some killer red zins.

Ahh, the things I have to go through for my peeps!

So, summing up as we still have the 7 till the end of February is...so far it has been nothing but automotive bliss.

The new 7 is not only better in every single way than its predecessor but it is in my mind, the best large luxury sedan, bar none on sale right now on sale the USA.

And if you're a savvy buyer , you already know this bad boy is the platform for the new Rolls-Royce Ghost...

You have NO idea how hard it will be to have to hand the keys back on this one at the end of February.

My only hope is Santa is working on getting us into the new 7-Series M-Sport when we return this.

"Time flies when you're having fun".

Truer words were never spoken!

When I test drove this car, I was blown away by how small/quick/agile and sporty it felt. Like a more luxurious version of my 335i M Sport. Too bad I can't afford it, but my go to the new 5 series next.

The new S class looks nice with the LED lights, but I still like the 7 overall.

Waiting for the lexus fans to start puking out some crap about the LS.

lol It's interesting how the new 7 is pretty recognizable from behind during the night, but in some light exterior colors, the 7-er isn't that recognizable during the day.
Advice: if you aren't one of those people that go bi***ing about cars being too flashy, I suggest picking an exterior color with a nice, mirror finish (black or something metallic). The "dry" headlights look don't complement "dry" [dusty] paint.

Anyways, 001, were you referring to the cupholders as one of the flaws? aha the Germans... I like to have a cup of Coke or at least a bottle of water since I live in LA.

An advice to those who want to test drive the new 7 but don't really plant to purchase one is: DON'T DO IT! I made the mistake of asking the salesperson to find me one with the stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and when driving home at the end of the day, my arm and legs were freakin' sore - nearly crashed a few times during rush hour, which is something that doesn't happen to me a lot... should've gotten another can of Coke from the salesperson to stay awake (great cupholders in my Lexus that didn't get to be used).

World of Luxury,

What the heck are you taking about?

Engineers at MIT couldn't figure out your point here.

You must be a pretty big boy to not be able to get in to the vehicle comfortably! I have driven the vehicle many times (my friend has one, dark graphite metallic with the brown 2 toned interior) and it is awesome. I have no complaints at all. The rear quarter grown on me quite a bit. Especially at night, it looks so much better with the LED's lit up. In its segment, there is no better car.
They definitely have increased their quality control in the last 3-4 years. What used to be a nightmare in 2002, is no longer. Nothing drives like this vehicle and you will never get bored. I love the google maps feature too!
Glad you enjoy the vehicle and I'm sure once you drive something else, you will be instantly reminded of how much you really do miss the 750li.

It's not the width, its where the top right corner of the driver door slopes.

At 6'5". you have to bend in and watch your head and angle it around.

People with back problems will pop their discs if they are tall.

The last thing we need is people coming in here proclaiming that the flagship of their favorite brand is the best and everything else "sucks". Any car in this class is already a masterpiece. What you decide to get is all a matter of personal preference and nothing more.

I myself have an S550 and I bought it because I liked several aspects about the car. I would, however, be just as happy with an LS460, 7-Series, A8, XJ and so forth.

What was your point? Yes, we understand that the standards for flagships are high. THe article author mearly says that the 7 is the best in it's class, and never says the competition suck. I have driven it myself and was impressed, just as I was when I drove the previous generation 7. I think this site is fun as people can argue and discuss their opinions of how the various models compare with one another. I personally have little interest in the LS or S Class- they lack the sporty characteristics (feels smaller than it is and exceptionally agile). I can't wait to see how the 7 stacks up against the next A8- whose interior just about blew me away.

There is no such thing as "best in class" to me because different people will rate a car that fulfills their needs higher than one that doesn't. "Best in class" is nothing more than personal bias.

Bill: I agree with you cause the the new BMW (most of them) are ugly, 7 series have a good performance but it is so ugly that just for that reason I would not buy one. In the other side the new A8 it is beautyful. But thats me...there is a lot of peolple that prefer 7 Not as much as S but there are. The beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and with is excelent for me, is not the same for others.

I think the new 7 is a nice car. The last time I was at the BMW dealership I noticed the Sport version. Great looking vehicle, and I also love the interior.

I also have to agree about the run-flat tires. What you went through with them, 001, is my biggest concern. BMW does not give you a spare, so if you have a problem on a weekend and no dealership or tire place that stocks run-flats, you will waste a lot of time.

The Audi A8 has a full sized spare! I don't know if they will in 2010 or 2011 when they introduce the new one. They used to have a full sized spare in the A4 then accountants got revenge and cheapened it down with donuts.

BMW 7 reliability problems continue. I just passed a brand new BMW 7 series stopped on a busy through-fare with both it's hazard lights flashing. The Driver looked really pissed, can anyone blame him.

Just my opinion, BMW and Mercedes Benz should just give up trying to improve their electronics and just subcontract their electronics design and installation to Lexus.
