Is 518 HP Enough? 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Fails To Disappoint

Consider that the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is nowhere near as quick as the 2010 Porsche Panamera Turbo and you might be disappointed. With four doors and a power figure beginning with the number five, the E63 should be capable of a toe-to-toe showdown with the sedan from Stuttgart, right? But it's not even close, because the Porsche is 0.7 second quicker in the quarter-mile and embarrasses the Benz to 60 mph by a merciless 1.1 seconds.

Porschephiles, however, would do well to rethink their number-loving zealotry for a moment. The Panamera is certainly impressive, but it will never cover itself in glory by means of a big, honkin' powerslide or even a measly burnout — ever. The Porsche, in all its stiff-collared precision, is to tire smoking what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is to jokes about inflation.

The big Benz, however, is happy to oblige with both powerslides and burnouts. In fact, tire smoking is an AMG specialty, a dynamic ability in brilliant contrast to the otherwise civilized Mercedes-Benz ethos. Accordingly, the E63 will smoke its tires with enough grace to make you forget all about the whipping you'll take on the Internet's numerous bench-racing forums about the Panamera's edge in speed. Plus the E63 AMG is also about $45,000 less costly than the Porsche and it doesn't look like an overstuffed 911, both big perks in the ass-hauling-sedan-for-grown-ups market.

For these reasons and many more, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG can never be called a disappointment.

Question:

What's The Deal With The Chromed/Up-Right Hood Ornament On An (Alleged) Uber-Sports Sedan?

nice observation! I did not catch that. Proof of the lack of attention to detail? doubt it. blah blah I'm tired of the new E already.

Really? You're going to complain now about something that Mercedes has been doing forever? W124 500E, W210 E55, W211 E55, W211 E63 and now this car all have up-right hood ornaments. Not to mention so does the famous CLK-GTR, and there is nothing alleged about how sporty it is.

I just dont see how the hood ornament has anything to do with anything.

On what city or town street is anyone really going to use all this 'Power'? The MSRP for these two 'sport' sedans is a joke. Absolutely no value for the dollars spent. Total waste of money and fuel. Folks who are spending money on something like this needs to have their taxes raised like right now and also have their heads examined by a doctor.

why do you care who spends their money on what. you sound a little jeloous to me. if they have the money let them spend it on whatever they want. the govt already wastes "your money." the people you owe the most to arent the credit cards or your bank for your mortgage its the government so i am going to spend it so they cant have it. More v8 v10 v12 power keep your sissy hybrids.

I have seen new E63 in person and it was parked alongside Panamera S in a showroom. Given a choice i would take Panamera S over it, i even think Panamera looks better than it.

I take Panamera too. Mercedes...no comment - keep rolling out junks from their recycle center. A good taxi cab, if it doesn't break down.

BMWRU: When you talk with the european taxi divers that's exactly what they said: "We choose the E cause it is more comfortable, more reliable and does not break down as the others (5 series, A6). And yes it is more expensive than the others but at the end it is the car do not requires to much attention as the others and last longer even in the hard working conditions that we use to work". When you are looking for the best, most reliable and the car that will last longer.....yes pay attention to the taxi drivers, they expend their lives driving so for sure they know more anyone here. If you do not want a taxi..buy an AMG but do not argument againts the taxi drivers, they back their words with facts not emotions. I like the new 5 series but If I see the Taxi drivers picking that one, then I'll think than that is a good car. For now If I decide to buy one, is because I like the profile, back and the interior more than the E, no other reason.

Your title and article dont make sense, wouldnt fails to dissapoint imply that it is a good car, im assuming you meant fails to impress? The E63 is the better looking car and for the price difference of the 2 you really could step further up in the Mercedes lineup, the Panamera just is odd looking the E63 amg to me looks better than the normal e class (which looks sorta old and outdated already). For over $100,000 no matter what 0-60 times are I think I would have rather have something else other than the Panamera

Nothing against the taxi drivers in Europe. On the contrary, they are one of the primary indicators that Mercedes reputation proceeds their quality. 30 years ago, "We choose the E cause it is more comfortable, more reliable and does not break down as the others (5 series, A6)" statement "might" apply - but not today. As a matter of fact, one german driver described it as " one of the most beautifully crafted craps ever made" while I was there last spring. The percentage of Mercedes taxi in Germany has dwindled drastically over the past decades, not because it is more expensive to own but because it's a POS. So pick up your snotty Mercedes ego and crawl back to your tri-star hole. Honestly, today's Mercedes is a bang-for-the-buck bargain luxury car compared to a 5 series, a GS, and an A6, price wise, performance wise, style wise, and ergonomics wise. Nothing more and nothing less...

What's the meaning of Philistine?
And what is wrong if i think i would choose Panamera S over E63. Panamera handles better, i like the interior more and even though outside i don't like the egg like shape but still it looks better than new E class to me. Panamera S with full options also costs roughly the same as E63 here in middle East.

stop with this taxi driver argument. nobody buys a car because taxi fleets choose them. that is a business decision made via balance sheets, government subsidies and corporate alliances. reliability/engineering superiority is just a marginal after-thought when choosing a taxi vehicle because nobody wants to buy a fleet of lemons. but that's it.
