A Lack Of Technology Or Brains? GPS Leaves Couple Stranded In Snow Storm For 3 Days

A Lack Of Technology Or Brains? GPS Leaves Couple Stranded In Snow Storm For 3 Days
A Nevada couple letting their SUV's navigation system guide them through the high desert of Eastern Oregon got stuck in snow for three days when the GPS unit sent them down a remote forest road.

On Sunday, atmospheric conditions apparently changed enough for their GPS-enabled cellphone to get a weak signal and relay coordinates to a dispatcher, Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger said.

"GPS almost did 'em in and GPS saved 'em," Evinger said. "It will give you options to pick the shortest route. You certainly get the shortest route. But it may not be a safe route."

Evinger said a Lake County deputy found the couple in the Winema-Fremont National Forest outside the small town of Silver Lake on Sunday afternoon and pulled their four-wheel-drive Toyota Sequoia out of the snow with a winch.

I agree. They elderly couple should have used a bit more discretion while traveling as the weather conditions worsened. They should have stuck to the major highways or roads with a bit more traffic.

I hate that the 2 got stuck in 18" of snow in a Toyota Sequoia. I shutter to think that the full-size SUV was loaded, has 4x4, and could have gotten free from the 1-1/2ft snow drift; but the couple didn't know how to use the low-gear options that are available at a push of a botton or turn of switch.

My 09 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon leaves cookie crumbs if you go off trail and doesn't get stuck because I have locking front and rear and center differentials and bad ass off road tires.

Yawn....This isnt news....human error should never be treated as a mainstream issue...especially from a trusted news source? Right? lol Your opinion don't matter...no one ask you what you feel.

Did you bother to see that Tryme posted "Toyota Expect a 17% production increase"?????? No, because that would be too much like right.

You love to HATE Toyota and while they aren't paying you any attention and Hyundai or GM isnt paying you any money, I'm vowing to not comment on your lack of being a NUETRAL news outlet any longer.....so sad. I wonder what your counterparts are saying? No I dont...

009 it would be a much better look if you posted exciting articles and where that will leave many Lexus and Toyota fans such as myself in the "open" it could concrete you as a solid news channel....

it really has nothing to do with paper or electronic maps. You could do the same with paper map or electronic device. Its up to the people to interpret the danger.

Its like if you are lost and GPS is leading you into a bad part of town in the middle of the night. Its pretty common sense to turn around and take another route. Most people either lack common sense or are afraid to wander around and find their own way around.

I love my GPS in both my cars, but seriously, if you're driving along and see no signs of life and nothing but trees and snow, common sense should immediately override whatever your GPS is telling you. I hate to say they deserved that but yes...they deserved that.

Lack of both...

most GPS systems are not very intuitive and are very one dimensional, in terms that it does not take anything into account except for which route is the shortest route. With that said, that is the lack of technology.

with that said, the couple is also very stupid. enough said.
