Uh Oh! Plug-Ins COULD Be Cleaner Than Hydrogen, By A Long Shot

Uh Oh! Plug-Ins COULD Be Cleaner Than Hydrogen, By A Long Shot
**Thanks to theoptimisticpessimist for the tip**

One of the longest held arguments against alternative energy vehicles has been that although the vehicles are cleaner and more efficient, their zero to low emissions are canceled out by their energy's sources.

Clearing up this mess is a new study published by Science Direct that investigates the issue. The results were astounding, to say the least.

According to the study, it seems that plug-ins are leading the way in cleaner emissions while hydrogen, fuel cell vehicles are lagging way behind.

Autobloggreen reports:

"Sometimes, it seems like people are out there studying things just to get our little community here up in arms. Case in point, a study published in Science Direct that looks at the well-to-wheels emissions of various "vehicle and fuel platforms," including plug-in vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells that get their energy from different places (like hydro-power and night-time electricity generation). The goal of the study is to determine what impact the various studies will have on California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, an effort to reduce the carbon impact of transportation.

Looking at the "marginal electricity mix" – defined as "the mix of power plants that is used to supply the incremental electricity demand from vehicles and fuels" – the study's authors found that even though most of the electricity used to move plug-in vehicles would come from..."

changing our cars is not enough. we have to change the way we generate energy also. we can't be 50% in 21st century and 50% in the 19th. that's BS

For once I agree with you, nuclear power ftw.

completely agree with you about the coal burning power plants (not so much on the walmart theory, haha). I cant speak for other states, but the provider for electricity in CA, PGE, is moving to alternative energy sources. By 2020, 40% of their energy will be generated by althernative sources, like wind, solar, and methane from cows.

even if plug-ins are charged up by coal burning powerplants, that still results in ONLY some 80% of the co2 discharge that burning gas for the same amount of miles. alternative power sources are simply CLEANER YET.

EVERY MILE powered off the grid, regardless of powerplant type, is a NET PLUS for minimizing emissions and greenhouse gases.

that's is true, but there are far biggest issues at hand. I've talked to Chinese officials, city planners, and they flat out say that they are using the U.S. debt they own to invest into a green environmentalist economy and industry that will dominate the world. U.S.A., while trying to save a few dollars short term, not doing enough on this, is falling behind big time.

I don't think USA will catch up. USA will fall behind EU, China and a number of other countries, simply because our government has not been progressive enough.

Plug in hybrids are nice, but too little too late.

better late than never.

all the more reason this country really NEEDS a well defined ENERGY POLICY. without it being written/influenced by the entrenched oil and coal industry lobbyists.

people didn't even conceive in the 1980s and early '90s that the japanese auto industry would zoom by and leave detroit in the dust. over time, we have slowly just ACCEPTED THIS.

there mite still be time for us NOT TO BE SHOCKED when china zooms past us in GREEN INDUSTRIES.

DinamoR.. Your comment is confusing. China Creates more pollution than any other and has flat out said they will continue with burning coal and the like because if they change ,it will slow there econmy. What rabbit are they going to pull out of there hat. The USA has come along way on emmissions regulations and implementing them. There are vast amounts of private companies and private money in the US that have discovered great technologies that should be used and what has held them back is the so called environmentalist.. I know because I'm in that situation. And if you are correct in assuming the USA will fall behind because China is using the United States debt they own to finance there goal, wouldn't it be Pres Obama that has allowed the US to fall behind? Be carefull on using the word Progressive, dosen't always mean a positive thing.

how do you plan to get rid of the oil/coal lobby? This is USA we're talking about, this whole country is run by lobbyists, just look at health care.

China is investing more than anyone in green technologies right now. Did you see the Lifepo4 batteries BYD is making? By 2012 China will have 8000 miles of high speed rail, few years ago they had Zero.

China is doing all the right things right now, and they will be the dominant economic power of the 21st century (along with European Union). USA will fall behind, that is written in stone already, as sad as it may be.

DinamoR, I realize how socialist you are so I believe Chinese communist values of sharing and healthcare might have you seeing things with pink sunglasses on. Picture this, the average 2 stroke scooter in China and India produces ten times more harmful emissions per km than a fully loaded escalade. This is due to the far far less than optimal tune of the bike and no catalytic converter. Even if China managed to surpass the usa however many times by getting 100,000,000 electric cars on the roads and high speed rail across the country, they would still have 400,000,000+ of these scooters polluting.

DinamoR...Lets just say for yucks that our energy source changes and we no longer use Coal and or Oil, whatever the new source is there will be a new lobby. I personally see nuclear power as the answer due to our very efficent clean coal tech, etc. Health care is another issue and has nothing to do with the reason for this site. Basic energy does if it supplies the source for Electric Vehicles. I strongly dissagree about China doing all the right things. It sounds to me as if you want the US to fall behind, I hope I'm incorrect. What we need is a leader that cheers for the USA and does not feel that he needs to apologise for it. Also gets out of the way of private sector business and progress which creates real jobs. The government should be the referee and have no say so in the outcome. Personally I'm cheering for the United States auto industry to become healthy again and also become independent on our energy resources. We are the best.

LMAO yes if I don't want to be screwed over by health insurance companies I must be a communist.

This stupidity and ignorance is what will destroy USA. It already has.

it did not help that GM and others WASTED so much time, money, and engineering resources chasing the false dream of hydrogen power.

BS about the healthcare. I'm not objecting to the fact that certain people who have managed to move up the monetary ranks can't afford better, I'm objecting to saying that the general populace doesn't have access to anything better than solving a cold.

American health care is a joke. Go to Canada, europe or Japan and say the words 'american health care' and people start laughing.

We pay $7500 per capita for health care, noone else pays more than $4000 (while insuring everyone, while we leave 1/6 of our population overbord)

our health care is also the most beauracratic on the planet- 20% of all heatlh care costs go for administrative purposes. In Canada it is 6%, in France 4%, in Japan 2%. If in any of those countries health care administrative costs go agove 8% people start riots on streets. But sheeple americans are fine with 20%.

I just don't see a bright future for this country. Sorry.

I live in Canada and I think our health care is a joke. You are going to be paying for it no matter if it is forced on you or not. Govt enforced health care encourages people to be unhealthy because their future surgeries do to leading an unhealthy life are already being paid for so there isn't that big financial risk for living a life of fast food and watching tv all day.
