Hot news on the upcoming Porsche Panamera

If it is indeed a Toyota-type system (Porsche did get cosy with them for a Hybrid drivetrain for the Cayenne) it is a waste of time.

A Petrol-Electric arrangement on a driver-focused sports sedan would not offer any real gains over a conventional Petrol engine.

For one, how often is the Panamera going to be sitting under 50km/h an hour? (Porsche may adjust the electric period, I don't know). This car is meant to be driven, its not a shopping trolley.

Second, the added weight of an electric system would hamper both the cars dynamics and performance. Not to mention the oh-so un-car-like silence of an electric motor.

The mere thought of a Porsche with an exhaust note similar to that of an electric toothbrush would send shivers down any purist's spines.

Most automotive industry analysts see Hybrid technology as a gimmick, and with the added weight and complexity of the system, coupled with a higher price, revealing no real gains over a petrol equivalent under normal driving conditions.

More efficient engines, improved aerodynamics and clever weight-saving are a more viable short-term solution to rising fuel prices and a wary consumer.

Let's just see how Porsche interprets Toyota's technology.

Hybrid is just a fill-in short-term solution to a much greater problem. A problem Hybrid technology will NOT address.

I can't presume to know how Porsche will apply this technolgy (if this article is true) on the Panamera but I know what I can't assume.

To stereotype this car as a shopping vehicle because it has a hybrid system is so close minded that I won't even comment.

To assume that a hybrid system is not for sport cars just because they have only been used (up to now) in economy cars and SUVs is also close minded (these same people may not know the meaning of Innovation).

Who's to know what the exhaust will sound like? again presumptions based on thin air.

If Porsche makes the Panamera with a hybrid and makes it perform like a sports car in every way and makes it easy to maintain then I just don't see the downside to owning a 30mpg sports sedan. I don't see ANYTHING wrong with having greater fuel efficiency if the car still performs. It's actually stupid and moronic to say that true sport car drivers only choose gas guzzlers.

It's pointless to criticize a product before its finished. I'm sure that Porsche has considered these and a million more questions before proceeding on a new product launch.
