SPIED: The DEATH Of The Wagon, BMW's 3GT Surfaces

With news reports telling us that BMW was going to move forward with the 3-series GT, we all knew one thing. This is essentially the death of the BMW wagon, IF the GTs sell well.

Although the GT can not be seen, as this mule is said to have only the mechanicals, Autocar has had an artist take care of a rendering for our viewing pleasure.

What are your thoughts, Spies?

Autocar reports:

"Underneath this disguised 3-series are the mechanicals of the forthcoming 3-series GT. BMW hopes the new model will broaden the appeal of the 3-series in the same way that a hatchback variant has widened the scope of the 5-series.

However, the new car won’t just be a smaller version of the Five GT. This time BMW is aiming to produce a fastback 3-series rather than the business express limo that is the Five GT. The 3-series GT will be more of a rival to Audi’s A5 Sportback, which is halfway between a fastback A4 and a four-door A5.

Not only would a GT variant help to make the 3-series more profitable..."

I am not a 3 series fan but I am really interested in this a lot. This will be more popular than the sedan by far especially with a M version

Why? What would make this more compelling, from your perspective?

Very cool rendering. BMW would do very well if the production version looked like this.

BMW made a Mazda 3 hatch!

That aside I think it's the best GT BMW has yet, if produced. However I could see this car starting in the low 40's and up to the low 50's on a price tag. Bummer.

When BMW builds the 3GT, it should look similar to this. An excellent rendering that is well thought out.

If only the eyes and nose would be that size. I bet it will more than likely have the same proportions as the one series.

I like it, and I like the 5 Series GT as well...

I own a BMW 5 series wagon and have test driven the 5GT...each have their place in a lineup. The GT passanger space is much larger than the wagon while the wagon's trunk space with the rear seats up is much larger and more easily accessible. I'll stick with the wagon because my wife's business requires lots of hauling. If my priority was passanger comfort I would go with the GT. I suspect it will be the same for the 3 series wagon and GT models.

We should be so lucky if it looks this good. Note no Hofmeister kink.

3GT has better proportions than 5GT and I would LOVE an M3GT as the perfect family hauler.

Right now I have my sights on the 5GT as a compromise between sedan or wagon (executive class) with the A7 a possible contender depending how it drives.

I don't get the point of all these "GT" models. I really don't. The X6 roof-line was pushed down to create a cross-over look. Why raise the roof-line from a sedan to create a "GT"?. Boggles my mind.

because "GT" sounds better than wagon. The ride height gives a command position like an SUV, but without the ride height and any compromise in the handling department. This also has great utility space. It will get better mileage than an SUV as it weighs considerably less. your mind should be less boggled.

I like it and I would buy one. I wanted a 335i wagon, but it just was not available in the US.

What death of wagons? The GT models from BMW are just a concept of a more practically version of a sedan.

Well it's certainly more attractive than the current wagon, and the 5 series GT if that picture is anywhere near accurate. Still not my cup of tea though.
