2011 Chevrolet Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Goes Into Production
The lithium-ion battery pack for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicles officially went into volume production today.

The 16-kilowatt-hour battery pack, containing 220 lithium-ion cells made by Korea's LG Chem, will be assembled in a 160,000-square-foot factory in Brownstown Township, Michigan, newly renovated at a cost of $266 million.

That plant will be the first in the U.S. in which a major carmaker assembles lithium-ion packs. Almost all current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal-hydride cells, which contain less energy than the lithium cells.

Actually it looks cheap to replace as the unit bolts into place. Compared with the Prius where the batteries are scattered around the car and are much more difficult and heavy to replace.

I don't think the installation procedure would be expensive, I think a lithium ion battery that big would expensive lol

Bought freaking time
GM - is so bad about stretching out their cars from concept to production that I am tired of the car by the time it hits the streets.
The Camaro was so old and boring by the time the car hit the streets. They are doing the same to the NEW Cruze, Regal, and Volt

What is worse? Stretching it out, or pumping out sketchy problem ridden vehicles?

I agree but look how long the VOLT and CAMARO have taken and how much press has been on them. If there is a problem (and hopefully there wil not be)it will be 100 times magnified by he media because of all the press and time they have put into these models.

Just like the Camaro transmission recall was magnified 100 times? </sarcasm>

The Camaro was a screw up mainly because it was in protoype form in the first Transformers movie, and that was 2 years pre production, then we see a different version in the Reveng of the Fallen. So since people had seen it and heard it in action a bit in the first film, it kinda was a jump the gun.

That Battery is PROJECTED to cost 16,000...meaning it still costs more then that now!
