NEW BMW Motor To Takeover 6-Cylinder Lineup, Little Improvements Make Big Gains

NEW BMW Motor To Takeover 6-Cylinder Lineup, Little Improvements Make Big Gains
When the N54 bi-turbo powerplant came out, it was heralded as one of the year's best motors. Now, BMW has made some adjustments and is introducing another engine. But why fix something that isn't entirely broke?

A BMW document from their Canadian operations says that the new motor will be aided by a single, twin-scroll turbo and has the following benefits:
  • Lowers weight
  • Improves weight distribution
  • Improves fuel efficiency
Surprisingly, the new mono turbo motor will not be available with certain models: Canada's 335is coupe/cabriolet and their Z4 sDrivei/is.

Considering there is no power change, there is not much to say against this motor swap. Cheers BMW!

Bimmerpost reports:

"The N55 is the second turbo engine out of BMWs new push towards EfficientDynamics and increased use of turbos as a replacement for displacement. The unit has been has been reviewed and people are generally happy with it, but whats interesting is that now it seems official: BMW will use the N55 as its main workforce with only a few notable exceptions"

depends on the size of the turbos. If the single turbo is creating as much psi as the two turbos then yes you are correct.

I don't really see the point.Couldn't they have just tweaked the N54 motor?

The way I see it, BMW must have a reason for changing the setup, vice tweaking the current. Modifications cost money, so it must necessary.

Lowers weight
Improves weight distribution
Improves fuel efficiency

3 good reasons to build a new engine. BMW are maniacs of weight distribution. That's why their cars drives so well. Nobody can say that BMW is being lazy here.

Read the article.

It is being expanded across their 6-cylinder lineup. THAT's the news, not the motor coming out.

Lets hope the fuel pumps don't fail with the twin-turbo engines like they have on the 335.

let's, mine did, but it was fixed in an hour and voila! at least its not like Toyota with the most recalls of any manufacturer for 2009, Toyota no longer equals reliability
