Audi predicts their sales will DOUBLE?

Volkswagen's premium brand Audi aims to nearly double annual vehicle sales to more than 1.4 million units by 2015 by expanding its product range to around 40 models, German business magazine Capital reported.

This will be complemented by plans to improve productivity by 10 percent per year, Audi CEO Martin Winterkorn said in an interview released before publication on Thursday.

"Including the high-performance S and RS lines, Audi offers a total of 22 models. We're planning roughly 40 models for 2015," he told the magazine.

It's interesting to see that you get criticized for not presenting the facts and yet you come back with "The market has already peaked and I DOUBT you'll see much more growth in it". I hope you don't make a career in trying to convince people!

What about the 20,000 in layoffs? ... that is what I call "lean" manufacturing. VW has had a problem with maintaining too many union line workers - but that is about to end. Production efficiency does not mean less production, it means less resources used to make the same as before (or more).

If you hate Audis that is fine and you're opinion is welcomed on an open forum, but don't try convincing people if you don't have any facts to support your claims.

Audi has increased sales 20% in the last year to January. It would take 5.3671% of sales increases every year until 2015 to reach 1.4 million. Considering that Audi will introduce roughly 18 new models, from its current total of 22 it is reasonable to say that (almost) doubling its number of models will (almost) double the number of sales.

Doing some simple math to measure the accuracy of the prediction:

830,000 vehicles sold with 22 models in 2005
37,727 vehicles sold per model (Avg)
1,509,091 vehicles sold with 40 models ... hmmm, this looks promising, but let's do some more analysis ...

Introducing 2 models per year until 2014 and assuming that each model will sell as much as the average Audi model (37,727 vehicles/year) and NOT considering sales increases year-over-year Audi would sell 1,509,091 vehicles in 2015. When considering a 5% increase in sales year-over-year on top of the 2 added models per year, Audi can bank on selling 2,301,042 vehicles per year in 2015.

So, I would say that 1.4 million vehicles is a fair target considering that a percentage of the new vehicles will likely be niche market vehicles.

Personally, I will do my part (replace my 2000 A6 2.7T 110,000 mi. with a new one or an S4/RS4 plus replace my small FX35 SUV with a now available Audi SUV).

My guess at the remaining 18 new models:
1. R8
2,3,4. Q7, QS7, Q7 Hybrid
5,6,7. Q5, QS5, Q5 Hybrid
8,9,10. A5 Coupe, S5 Coupe, RS5 Coupe
11,12. A5 Cabriolet, S5 Cabriolet
13,14. TTS, TT-RS
15. A4 Coupe
16,17. S3, RS3
17. A2

It can be argued that this estimate does not consider sales growth or that the prediction is conservative.

..I care about product! They just might offer enough product to win over some of the BMW converts. If they can keep the weight down I'd go back to Audi to get an A5 coupe. Furthermore, the new A4 replacement this year MUST have more power. 0-60 times are too slow for the 3.2 liter. I hope the quality is better, I'd love to go back to Audi.

Conservative estimate.

I agree that 1.4 million sales by 1015 is a conservative estimate. As long as Audi continues to grow at its current rate, it will easily reach that number.

However, Audi is accelerating its technology advancements at a startling rate, and its acceptance as a tier 1 premium brand has finally hit the US (despite some ill-informed dinosaurs that still cling on to a BMW/Merc/Lexus-only luxury car world). This coupled with its recent separation from VW as a discreet technology company and billions being poured into product development, will, in my estimation, allow Audi to significantly surpass its 1.5 million sales mark.

For me, the most exciting forthcoming technology from Audi is the new flexible 'B' platform that will support the latest A4, A6, and possibly A8 (and, like the current A4's and A6's platform, of course not be shared by VW). It will boast 50/50 weight distribution, short front overhangs (due to the swapping of engine/front axel/transmission), lighter rear-biased quattro, and next-gen 7 speed DSG. The next A4/A5 (to be unveiled within a year) is a car that BMW is very, very nervous about.
