2010 DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Ford Breaks Out The Broom And Sweeps The Industry

Ford is having a hell of a week. With the debut of their 2012 Ford Focus, to generally positive feedback from the automotive world, and with a win under their belt -- not once but twice -- things cannot get much better than that.

Mind you, these weren't local or regional awards for something like "the town's 'wet down,'" where everyone is a little bit stranger than normal.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid swooped in and nabbed the North American Car of the Year and the Ford Transit Connect grabbed the North American Truck of the Year.

The New York Times Reports:

DETROIT — The Ford Motor Company’s strong showing in 2009 was reaffirmed Monday with a sweep of the North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year Awards.

The awards are given by a jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, and announced here each year at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

The car award went to the Ford Fusion Hybrid, marking the fourth time a gasoline-electric hybrid car has won in the 17 years the awards have been in existence. Ford’s Escape Hybrid sport utility vehicle won the award in 2005....

anyone know if the next Fusion will be the next Mondeo from Europe? It's a great car.

The Mondeo is a bigger car than the Fusion (2" wider, 3" taller). Although the next one may be based on a shared architecture.

Huu, the current Fusion is an MCE. That being said a LOT of stuff was changed other than bumpers and head/tail lights. The interior is thoroughly redone, new engine options, and the class leading hybrid system is all new. Generally these kinds of awards base their decision on things like market impact, something the new Fusion is doing well. it is changing perceptions and seems to be increasing market share, which lets face it was sliding for a long time at Ford.

I think ford is bringing out products people are interested in. They may not be the best cars out there but their quality has improved quite a bit over the years and bringing people into their showrooms which is helped because the media news have generally been positive for them. Compared to where they were a couple years ago, glad to see that ford has improved and listened to the public (to an extent at least). I did see a fusion that had the chrome strips painted matte, which actually looked pretty good.

The Fusion needs a redesign for me to be a true buyer. Although I love the freshen up they did with the 2010 model, the front and rear are 1000x better and the new Sport model seems a good bet. Not to mention Ford offers A LOT of options and gadgets for people in any budget. You can get a Fusion for under 20, or loaded for right at 30. And even just a tad over base you get some nice options. Not to mention it is one of the FEW competitors in this segment with AWD optional. You won't see that on Honda, Toyota, Chevy, Nissan. So if you are interested in AWD of any type, count those out unless you want an SUV. If Ford only offered a slightly peppier 4 cylinder to handle an AWD system it would give me some interest.
