Lotus dual-clutch gearbox: new details revealed

Lotus has a pending patent application relating to a lighter, simpler and more compact dual-clutch transmission system. In its application Lotus Cars engineer James Turner emphasizes the need for a more compact design of transmission unit, with fewer parts.

The gearbox is an eight-speed unit, with seven forward gears and reverse. Rather than Lotus Engineering, the application is submitted by Lotus Cars. However, Lotus sources say that the unit is being developed by its Engineering arm. What this means is that the system will be made available to customers.
