GM's Lutz: Higher gas tax would help
DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) -- Bob Lutz is generally not a close ally of environmentalists.
The vice chairman of General Motors is a frequent critic of fuel economy rules and once declared that global warming was a "total crock" of excrement, although he used a more common and colorful word in that description.

It's sad but it's true, maybe then people would start seriously looking at which brands get better fuel economy.

What an idiot. Gas taxes just add to government wasteful spending and would hurt the poorest people the most. Remember Europeans would be living under a flag with a swastika or hammer and sickle if had not freed them, not to mention they were always at war with each other until we knocked some sense into them.

Can you explain how collecting taxes increases wasteful spending?

I hate to say it but I agree with Badgewhore except the republican war thing. If anything the Democrats love higher taxes or a reason to raise taxes so they can spread the wealth and have more control over the general public. I do agree with giving to non-profitt organizations that actually help people. On the other hand Im not for higher taxes on anything. Its freedome of choice. There is more proof that global warming or what I would rather say climate change, would happen weather humans were here or not. A large percent of environmental information is crap. Fuel efficency along with other attributes should be the incentive rather than a forceable issue. If customers focused on fuel efficency then thats what the manufactures will build. We as consumers do it to ourselves and then complain about high taxes and added fees.

Mr Lutz's recent promotion, or should I say re-promotion reflects the March firing of Rick Wagoner and the recent departure of Fritz Henderson and if Bob Lutz enjoys his position, he knows to get with the program. Mr Lutz is not a stupid man.

he is right. also, this would significantly help reduce our massive trade imbalance with the middle east. rather have expensive gas, and be free to buy what we want, than force the manufacturers to produce crappy compromises (e.g. Honda CR-Z) or that have to be pushed (subsidized) onto unwilling buyers.

Lutz is bipolar. He and the rest of the auto industry had fought government intervention in the auto industry for decades (CAFE, CARB, etc). But ever since GM bet its entire future on the Volt, now he is asking for higher gas taxes so the Volt can better compete.

Why is everyone's solution an increase to the tax. Overseas producers are just going to increase costs to compensate. Decrease the export of fuel and redistribute it throughout the U.S. and the prices will rise on their own because of manufacturing costs.

I get the impression that the only reason politicians and CEOs keep cramming this down our throats is because they have a huge stake in overseas production.
