Toyota's President Says 2009 Was A Tough Year, Vows To Improve Safety and Quality
Despite massive recalls in 2009, Toyota emerged the big winner of the annual R.L. Polk loyalty awards at the Automotive News World Congress Tuesday night.

Toyota took home four awards for customer loyalty. But during his speech to the Congress, Yoshimi Inaba, president of Toyota Motor North America Inc., said the company had no intention of resting on its laurels.

“Our quality and safety were severely questioned,” he said. “We learned lessons the hard way, but with the support of our dealers we will do everything to let our customers know how much we care for them and how committed we are that they drive the safest cars on the road.

“Our New Year's resolution is to redouble our efforts to provide the best engineering, manufacturing and after-sales support in the industry."

"Maybe just more efforts in design in the low end segment"

I thought all Toyotas were in the low end segment.

Quality is already there in general, they are finally experiencing the same issues the rest of the world is.

Safety is where they need to focus. To not have an intelligent ECU software package to detect conflicting inputs was dumb. They also need to raise their crash ratings to be the leader not an also ran.

Basically guys they need to innovate NOT refine existing technologies.

Saying and doing are two different things. When you are as big as toyota , it takes a while to implement a change. Loyalty is a good thing but only lasts so long. Its good Inaba is tagging this base rather than ignoring the issues.

lexworld,

If you think that Toyota is the best car manufacturer then you need help. The CEO isn’t even defending the cars but you are? Specifically what is the "best" about them? Please answer. I mean all you have to do is look at Toyota’s current lineup and the answer is plain as day. The Camry isn't better than anything, same goes for the Yaris, Avalon and Corolla. All the cars mentioned are mundane/dull/boring cars that are far from anything that anyone with a pulse would consider buying. And Toyota's most exciting car? The Matrix. LOL!!! And you call that the best? LOL!! Hyundai has a more exiting vehicle lineup than Toyota and builds more desirable cars.

Toyota's current products are crap, nothing more than a Japanese equivalent of GM. Toyota cannot blame the economy for their downturn. Even their CEO knows that it isn’t the economy, it’s the dull cars that they are currently producing. Wake up!!!

Nope you're wrong again Lexsucks...Toyota CEO didnt say his products are crap and you absolutely wont find so called fanboys doing the same because they dont feel or see the need to repent. We know the Toyota Motor Corp. is the best, not without flaws, but simply the best auto manufacturer in the world and will get even better because of past mistakes. Get over it! You aint seen nothing yet! Wait till you see what's coming down the pike. Mr. Akio Toyoda is now in charge as of June 09 and he aint playin and sure to kick some serious butt. Ask Agent009..........

Honda makes safer vehicles and have better quality hands down, for some reason Consumer Reports has never reported on engine sludge problems on the corolla and matrix, I dare you fans of Toyota to google engine sludge Toyota and pages upon pages will appear, then google the same for Honda, not one other than Toyota's.Let facts guide you to the truth, not ego or emotion.
