Does Scion Really Need A Compact Truck To Win Over Younger Buyers?
Toyota Motor Corp’s Scion youth brand is studying whether a compact pickup truck would fit the niche brand’s all-car lineup, Scion General Manager Jack Hollis tells Ward’s.

Trucks are “not off the table,” Hollis says in an interview at the 2010 North American International Auto Show here. “If I said, ‘off the table,’ I’d like to take that back.

“Toyota has such a strong heritage of doing a very good job with youth and with trucks, when you look at (the Toyota) Tacoma – I’m not trying to be too cocky, but we pretty much have owned that segment for a long time. We have to find a niche. I think there is room for it.”

Yeah.. perhaps a small truck would help Scion winning over some 45 y/o youngsters.

Hey, at least that would lower their average.

Scion is getting aged. The tC has minimal changes and still markets itself as the only small coupe with a standard glass moonroof whatever it is.

I've said it from the beginning. One thing Toyota needs to do is offer TRD versions of their cars. Similar to say the Ford SVT or AMG, or M. Take note I'm not saying to compete with those, just as an example. TRD is the in-house tuner and performance for them so why not utilize it more. Offer a TRD version of some cars, the Solara, tC, xB, Corolla Matrix, etc. The only TRD they had was a truck which didn't sell. Not the TRD off road, but that lowered Tundra TRD thing.

Give the cars more power, turbo's and superchargers and the suspension, braking, appearance changes people want. You could easily make a TRD Corolla/Matrix with a turbo or S/C on the 2.4L. Or even go crazy and put the Rav 4 V6 AWD drivetrain in the Matrix and let it blow the doors on the Mazdaspeed 3.

I dunno, I get crazy when I talk about this, but it just makes sense. Stop offering crap people don't want.

Hey dont make fun of those 45 y/o youngsters they're helping pay the bills at Toyota...beside it's the baby boomers who still pay the bills at Toyota and they are the majority of purchasing power of buying automobile with the youth not even close. So you guys just go ahead and follow Joe_Limons way of thinking and you'll make Toyota even richer than they already are. Personally I dont think Toyota needs a truck to win younger buyers...they just need to cater to their needs, wants and creative ideas and bam!..its done!

since the Tacoma has grown bigger and fatter, YES, it would make sense for toyota to bring out a new COMPACT truck, and it CAN be more a PLAY truck than a real work truck under the Scion brand.

i know three people who bought new tacomas in the past 2 years. at least two INTENTIONALLY got the Four, not the v6. and one specifically wanted 2wd, NOT a 4x4.

i myself have a '94 which is 36 mpg capable. WHEN (not if) gas gets to $4/gallon and more again, people will wonder WHY everyone made their efficient mini-trucks into borderline gashog miditrucks.

further, these compacts CAN STILL be 1/2, 3/4, and even 1-ton trucks. it's just a matter of heavy duty suspensions, and gearing. big, thirsty engines are NOT a requirement.

How about another "Back to the Future" type spot in a blockbuster movie?--That's why the 40 yr olds drive em, isn't it?--'One day Jennifer, I'm going to buy a toyota 4x4...sleeping bags in the back...
