STUD or DUD: Is Toyota And Subaru's Joint Project Making The Right Progress?

STUD or DUD: Is Toyota And Subaru's Joint Project Making The Right Progress?
Today, the Toyota/Subaru project car "stole the Tokyo Auto Salon," when it was uncloaked. And, we can totally see why.

Sporting some new body work and a 2.0L turbo'd four-cylinder Subaru motor, the car seems to be progressing quite nicely. The adjustments account for a bit of growth in length and width. Additionally, the car gets a lower stance and some nifty technological upgrades with its GPS unit, which is said to be developed by the people behind the Gran Turismo video game series and Denso, an auto tech giant.

For more information, continue on below...

Autocar reports:

"Toyota stole the Tokyo Auto Salon today when it unveiled this stunning, new shape FT-86 G Sports Concept.

The car is an evolution of the 'Toyobaru, the lightweight rear-drive sports coupe that Toyota and Subaru are working on together.

This latest interpretation has a sharper front end and more aggressive side body treatment, new wheels and matt black bonnet.

The lower front air intake is both larger and more dramatic, with central vent and air blades either side. There are new side sills and deeper body vents for cooling both front and rear brakes..."

lose all the extra DTM crap and yeah I would say it could be a STUD.

It doesn't wow me but it's not terrible...although it would look much cleaner without all the aftermarket add-ons. I just hope it has enough power to really create an all around fun driving experience.

So far it's a STUD. Remove does cx-killer/weight-expander wings and aero kit and I think it's a neat car.

And it has begun, it is beginning to lose all of its visual flash. Pretty soon it will blend in perfectly between the scion tc and corolla.

I must agree, I did like the original Red version better.

Looked cleaner and not as tacky...

Joe_Limon your obvious hate of ToMoCo somehow seems to corrupt your judgement to stabalize the common sense thought process. There's no doubt ToMoCo has been in the hands of greedy buracrates over the last decade but..... make no mistake Toyota is now back in the hands of the Toyoda family (via incoming pres Mr. Akio Toyoda, grandson of Toyotas founder) and he will bring a revoution to the automotive world...yep you guessed it!...via through the Toyoda way by returning to its roots, and man they had some great ones! This revolution begins with the Lexus LFA and probably the FT-86 next.....

Lexworld. Would you prefer to own the original concept or this one? Me, I like the original red one.

...and furthermore if you look closely it has a little Nissan GT-R in probe as well. You see all Toyota is doing is probing for consumer feed-back and these are some of the methods they use to gauge interest/loyalty. They basically let us tell them what we like and dont like about cars/trucks in their perspective classes via price range and this is just the begining because first you have to have a passionate leader at the top who genuinely loves to race cars and bring a lot of this technology and qaulity to the manufacturing process...Mr Akio Toyoda is that man!

Yes! Toyotas joint effort with Subaru is making the right progress. Let it be known...Toyota is not going to allow this effort to undermind their aggresive efforts to independently come out on top because Subaru in and of itself is no match for Toyota.

STUD. This is exactly what Toyota needs at the moment. Also the source is saying power could be as much as 320BHP Subaru 2.0 Turbo. Now that would be awesome and FT86 would challenge 370Z and Caymans. Bring it soon Toyota.

despite the haters, YOU ARE RIGHT.

at first glance, LFA IMMEDIATELY leapt to mind, before the thinking, detail scanning, and actual reading kicked in.

DEFINITE lexus LFA elements borrowed for the headlights, and straight on view. STUD without question!

well you must think all Caddys are duds too then.

caddys are OVERSIMPLYFIED polygons. it takes japanese minds to create more ADVANCED forms.

I'm gonna get deboosted like heck for this, but, w/e.

It doesn't look innovative/original to me; a little Scion TC here, some GT-R there, some LFA over there, a little old-school RX-7 at the rear (head on I'm even reminded a bit of the S2000.) Plus, they had to resort to a bunch of gills and wings and slits to make it exciting. The first concepts were more attractive and unique.

No way this is a stud. I mean, we harp on Hyundai all the time for borrowing style cues on here, but, this is blatant, and no one's called 'em out on it. At least they took mostly from Toyota designs - they've got enough divisions they can get away with it.
