Are You Interested Now? GM CEO Says Chevrolet Volt Will Sell In Low $30’s
The Chevrolet Volt will be an expensive car to produce.   Cutting edge technology and large proprietary lithium-ion battery packs make up the lion’s share of cost.  Another speculated element of cost is factoring in the possibility of some degree of warranty-required battery replacements.

In the very early days of 2007, GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz had mentioned a goal of under $30,000.  Eventually that target appeared to be moved higher, though never official confirmed by GM.

Along the way, the federal government passed legislation that will give initial Volt buyers a $7500 tax credit, and more recent media speculation has put the price closer to $40,000.

However, there have been new reports that GM may surpise the world with a lower number.

It would be a good price but I wouldn't count on it.

VOLT "PLUG-IN" HYBRID to be correct. Anyways, how do people like you always miss the point? In that case, I would rather have a 2010 BMW 328i. Isnt that low 30's too?

The point: The type of vehicle this is and the type of buyer who is interested (the green ones) wont be cross shopping a Z and a VOLT.

I can't fit in the 370Z the seats have side bolsters that kill my back! I liked the 350Z seat better i will take that over a volt lol

And it is still light years more attractive of car than the Prius or Insight. Start it in the low 30's and you have buyers.

I suggest we wait until the fat lady sings before we decide if this car is a "good deal."

So 3 min. of actually pumping really ruins your day? Buy an Insight or a Prius as both of these cars put out better mileage and cost thousands less. Also in the long run will save you more money by the time you want a different vehicle.

are they nuts its an economy box. it will take 10 years for you to recoup the difference in price on gas savings. gm will never learn. hybrids are a waste. unless you own them 6 years or more

They still have not released official MPGs for this car because they are not quite sure how to rate it. Given that the technology (similar to a diesel electric locomotive) uses nothing but PURE electric for 40 miles regardless of acceleration, braking, internal component usage, etc. Then the engine maintains a constant RPM simply to charge the electric drivetrain. You are NEVER really driving using the gas engine for direct power, the power is given through the electric drivetrain always.

Fuel savings on this should be a lot more than what you get on a Prius or Inisght. Not to mention a $7,500 credit, you can recoup losses quicker.

Let's also not forget cars, aside from classics are depreciable items. You will never get your full dollar back, just whatever the percentage of depreciation is versus the value at the time of sale based on many factors such as mileage, accidents, etc. So to sit there and balk about saving money on buying a car is just a stupid argument. If you want to make money on a car, buy a classic, keep it in your garage and sell it 20 years later. Otherwise, buy a bike and you will save money every day.

Are you saying 80% of cars are sold at a loss? or are you saying that 80% of cars are bought for reasons other than which one was the cheapest?

Game over. GM Wins.

That will be the headline IF GM actually sells the Volt in the low $30's (and assuming its not a total POS). They are going to kick ass.

I was thinking of buying one at $40K (give the wife's 3-series to my son and give her my X5), but in the low $30's with $7500 credit, its a no-brainer. I only drive 16 miles round trip to work. I'll never buy gas again and plan to flip the bird at every gas station I pass.

Sure, I'll admit that all I will have really accomplished is trading the evil oil companies for the evil elecrtic companies (both of whom want to extract as much money out of me as inhumanly possible), but sometimes it feels good to be hit on the other side of the head for a change.
