SPIED: Could THIS Be The Coolest Range Rover Yet?

SPIED: Could THIS Be The Coolest Range Rover Yet?
For years Land Rover Range Rover has consistently produced some of the best off-roading vehicles on the planet. Known to ascend steep inclines, ford rivers and conquer the world's trickiest motoring conditions, these are some of the toughest cars known to man.

That makes them cool in their own right but their styling has been relatively stuffy and unchanged for decades. Sure they have been modernized but is it really all that different?

But, if you do not recall, a couple of years ago Land Rover featured a new two-door concept dubbed the LRX. After taking a look at the small sport-utility vehicle, I remember thinking "Damn, that may be the very first sexy Range Rover."

Banking on the success of the Range Rover Sport, which has become the "IT" car for young professional women in London and New York City, it looks like the brand will continue channeling its sportier side.

CAR reports:

"We'll finally see the finished Range Rover LRX for real this year – the production LRX is likely to be shown later in 2010. But for now we'll have to make do with ever-more-frequent spyshots of the LRX testing in mule guise.

That means the
car you see here winter testing in the snows of Scandinavia is far from the finished product. It's based on a chopped-about Land Rover Freelander bodyshell, as the engineers continue to test the hardware underneath.

The LRX will feature four-wheel drive – this is a Land Rover, after all – but it is possible that this is one product from Solihull that could be available as a front-driver too in a bid to trim weight, consumption and emissions..."

Old news? This has been 'spied' on for at least a year.

Definetly old news. Whatever happened to the other 2 door concept? I think it was called the storm.

Changing their styling will not make them any cooler than they are right now. It's like Porsche's iconic 911 has been refined throughout generations. Range Rovers are known for that body shape. Of course changing all the panels and continuing to produce consistent off-roading capable machines is what they do best. Range Rover is not Jaguar who needed a new identity to revive the brand. My two cents.

There is something about Range Rover's brand identity that immediately evokes prestige and luxury. The new venture into sportier versions has not been hated, if anything it has been embraced.

Very valid points, Agent63. Well said.

I can not in good conscience by my wife a car that I know she will have to take to the shop every 3 months. Love the capabilities, love the look, love the prestige, but can't stand the inconsistent quality.

I was skeptical as well, having owned several, very reliable Japanese cars, switching to a British car, let alone an LR, was not an easy decision.

So far so good. 16 months, 15.9k miles, 0 problems thus far.

I have a feeling that they may end up dropping the LR2 when this comes out late next year, but we'll see. They LR2 is a great little truck and is probably the best compromise between off/on road driving, luxury and price in the segment.

The LRX is a Land Rover not a Range Rover. Land Rover is a model of Range Rover.

wow you are an idiot

The LRX is going to be badges as "Land Rover Range Rover LRX"

LAND ROVER is the BRAND
RANGE ROVER is a MODEL of the BRAND

Think "BMW 3-series" - "Land Rover Range Rover"

get it?

My error I understood this car to be smaller then the LR2, inverted the other brand model DOH.

Correct...LRX is NOT a Range Rover it is a Land Rover.
Incorrect....Land Rover is a model of Range Rover.

The Land Rover Range Rover full body and Sport models ROCK!
I am on my 3rd Range Rover....I would find it hard to drive anything else! Have you driven a Range Rover lately?

I think it looks too much like the Freelander or whatever they are calling the "new" version of it. Such crap inside and out those Freelanders and if this new LRX looks ANYTHING like it, they are done... Still respect the Range Rovers, but they have a crumby entry level that does not even make the radar of those shopping for small luxury SUVs.

The older freelanders were a piece of a crap hole. It spends most of its time in Service. LR2's the only major problem with these cars were "starting problems". once it overheats car won't start. Hopefully when they produce this LRX it wont have the same problems as the LR2.
