Are Touch-Pad Dashes The FUTURE Of Automotive Tech?
With MyFord Touch debuting at this year's CES event and Audi's all-new A8 boasting "touch" technology, is this the next wave?

OR, is it merely a clumsy display of technological indulgence?

Are auto manufacturers beginning to implement technology for technology's sake or is this actually purposeful?

Let us know in the comments below....

The Wall Street Journal reports:

"Your iPhone operates by the touch of your fingers. Why not your car?

Auto makers are starting to roll out a new generation of dashboard technology that substitutes touch-sensitive pads and displays for knobs and switches and videogame-style graphics for drab two-dimensional displays. Technology created to power games, mobile phones and computer displays is now being adapted—and often significantly improved—for those two-ton hand-held devices that come with four tires and leather seats.

Later this year, Volkswagen AG's Audi unit will launch a redesigned A8 sedan with an optional touch pad that allows the driver to send commands to the car's navigation and Bluetooth telecommunications systems by tracing letters with a fingertip..."

Voice command works fairly well as long as there are no interfering sounds, like passengers talking in the car, kids screaming in the back seat, or exterior street noise when the windows are down.

I use voice commands on the BMW and while not perfect, it is pretty useful.....you just need to memorize a bunch of weird phrases like "assistance window map direction of travel"

I hope not. I have a touch-screen radio in my car and after a while (one day) the finger print smudges looks horrible. I cant imagine a complete dash covered with finger print smudges.
