Exclusive Test, Porsche's All-New Cayenne Is Going To Be A More Hardcore Off-Roader
It will grow in size, but be lighter. It will have use its brother's architecture, the Panamera, and will be capable of more intense off-roading.

We present to you, the first test of the all-new Cayenne.

Although the outgoing Cayenne was well-respected with its off-roading skills, the new Cayenne is said to take a serious beating, according to Autocar.

One downside: no PDK transmission. The most coveted option on most Porsche's order sheets simply cannot handle the high stress of low speed maneuvers according to a Porsche head of development. For more information, read on here at AutoSpies...

Autocar reports:

"Porsche’s new Cayenne will have much improved off-road ability than the model it replaces, Autocar has learned while on an exclusive development ride along in the new luxury SUV.

Jurgen Zoellter joined Porsche’s head of development Rolf Frech and his team in the UAE to test the Cayenne’s resilience to hot weather, as well as its ability to cope with the extreme conditions of a 300ft sand dune known as Big Red.

Off-road ability

Advancements have been made to the Cayenne’s centre and rear locking differentials, its air suspension, traction control and torque vectoring system to improve its off-road ability over the old car.

The Cayenne Turbo model tested was able to go up and down Big Red four times, with the speed rarely dropping below 30mph..."

I tell you what... Where I live (New England)... Probably ZERO, but then again, thats probably true for 99% of SUV owners around my area...

What Porsche needs to do is add an option that equips some nice beefy steel tube sidebars and front/rear bumper guards. The main laugh about an off roading Porsche is the fact that nobody wants to ding them, add some body panel protection and you might attract a new niche.

actually Porsche already stated the way they were dropping that weight off the Cayenne was by eliminating some of the off-road oriented items that Cayenne owners basically don't need, like the extra differentials. So they're making it LESS off roady, not more, and that's a good thing. No one is taking a Cayenne Turbo S rock climbing.

Something about people like me... We want our expensive, luxury SUVs to be able to do anything - perhaps something to do with LA earthquakes? I bet my LX 470 logs in much more miles both on- and off-road than all the Jeeps, G-classes, H1s, Range Rovers, Land Cruisers, and other SUVs out there. The torque makes it a more fun family hauler for vacations than a minivan; off-roading is usually unplanned but always fun, and my friend with his Cayenne loves joining me with his family. It's amazing how the Cayenne can do so much with road tires.

If I ever see a Porsche Cayenne off-roading in Fairfield or Westport, I'll be sure to stop and laugh. Where would they need it? Oh that's right, driving from the carriage house to their horse stables on those snowy days.

yea, really! but not to say they are not capable. The Cayanne is a very capable car, just many in the area does not use it for that purpose...

They seriously need to offer off road tires for any hope of going off road! I know they test with them so why not offer them as an option?

Because those 300 wide tires look so good!!!

Except when trying to drive through snow. The flatten it to a nice slippery sheet instead of traversing through it

Why spend that cheese on a Cayenne and then get it dirty. Go buy a Toureg and use the extra cash to fix what you're gonna break....like window switches, locks, stereo components, leatherette seating surfaces, sunroof, and what not.
