FAIL: Mercedes-Benz's ML Mule Does Not Pull Through In The Clutch Moment
So, what happens when you are stuck in Sweden, with a couple of mules, doing some winter testing and a car gets stuck off-road? You use a properly modified S-class AMG, apparently.

Recently while doing some testing, MB engineers tried to use the next-gen ML but failed. This led on to a little bit of a problem, as the following depicts.

For more photos of the incident, click "read more."

SpeedLux reports:

"Mercedes is cold weather testing their future models in northern Sweden. Conditions are very extreme – cold temperatures and tons of snow. This week Mercedes got into a little trouble with the S-Class Coupe AMG facelift, which ended up in deep snow just few feet from the road.

How to pull it out?
You could call a tow truck or ask local farmer for help, or you can continue the testing and call the next-generation ML prototype to the scene. Not the smartest idea as there were plenty of people soon at the spot and engineers had to cover the prototype to hide as much of it as possible.
.."

more like a range rover. some A4 sure wouldn't have helped.

enthusiast... generally, A4s are not good for towing, FYI

maybe a G-class, but nooo... they wanted to show off the ML mule but ended up on the defensive.

Maybe this test mule doesn't have all the systems on board that a regular ML does? It's still a testbed after all.

This is a good thing :P Maybe now they will concentrate on making a world leading awd system.

It's okay turbo, we still like Mercedes. Your long and lengthy text sometimes, though, is tiresome and overkill. Like you're kind of making up for something...

Yup, copy and paste, you're the best here. No need to say you're welcome, there was no thanks!

lol at the comments.

I didn't bother reading through your copy paste. Maybe if you would have posted a link I'd be more inclined to read it.

The CL AMG is a very heavy car. And the new ML didn't even have chains on its tires. The best all wheel drive systems won't help if there it simply too little mechanical grip available.

Finally, they had to use BOTH cars, with the S class AMG wearing chains, to pull the grounded in the snow CL.

They have open rear and front diffs, the brakes ON e-dIFF can only do so much compared to a TRUE LOCKING REAR DIFFERENTIAL!

These are engineers and they cant figure out how heavy and s-class coupe is as compared to an ml in zero traction conditions? Hmmmmmm????????

Maybe they'd of stood a better chance!

Should have brought a Wrangler Rubicon with a winch kit.

yOU DON'T NEED A WINCH JUST LOCK THE FRONT AND REAR DIFFS, PUT HER IN LOW AND VOILA NOTHING CAN STOP IT

Maybe a lack of weight in the Jeep. But the Rubicon would of faired better than the open diff ML. What about a G Wagon? That would of worked!

WhelanWhelan - 1/25/2010 3:33:53 PM

That was my point, there is no button on a ML to lock the differentials, hence my naming of the Rubicon. Also with a proper winch you could just keep the jeep on the straight path with traction and winch the car out of place.

Actually it probably would have been more fun to put it in Low and do circles around the stuck car and the Benz SUV. :-)

It was never meant to be a G-Wagon or a Range Rover anyways. Like how an ML63 and X5-M was never meant to be a sports car.

Keep in mind that even the best 4WD's traction is limited to four patches of rubber each the size of your palm, give or take. The ML is not a serious towing vehicle but reasonable to try (especially if you're stuck in freezing conditions; beats digging snow anyday). As for 4WD sedans I'm a big fan of these. I recall almost sliding backwards down an Austrian slope in the middle of winter while trying to turn around on a narrow ski chalet path in 7-series BMW. Solid, heavy car but not well suited to those conditions. I'd take a 4WD luxury sedan/suv any day.
