Will The Bangle BMW Designs Become Sought After Classics Or Azteks?
Over the last few days we've been blasting you with coverage of the all new, 2011 BMW 5-Series here on Auto Spies.

The new 5 definitely signals an evolutionary design update, which is in line with company philosophy.

Every time they do a revolutionary design, the next update is has evolutionary spin.

But with Chris Bangle at the reins, the last one was REALLY over the top revolutionary.

So it begs the question...Will collectors search out the Bangle BMW's in the collector market down the road and pay big bucks or will they become the red headed stepchildren of the BMW line?

And remember before you answer, he did the 7 and 5 but also the last and current 3.

So he could do both avant garde AND conservative work, depending on the task at hand.

Discuss....

Not quite Aztek-levels, but you can already get bangle era 5s and 7s for about the price of a nice used Scion here on the West coast. They're as common as Camrys now.

Translation = Already Forgotten

I'm talking down the road, not just now.

And a used 7 for the price of a scion?

Would that be a 'totaled' 7?

I personally love the 2008 and newer 550i and the newer 535's with the 550 kit..

I think they were his best effort and the only 5's I ever liked.

And this 335 coupe/convertible is the greatest 3 ever.

I think the bangle shaped 5er was the best looking 5 to date. I say this car would be a classic. there is no other car in its class that will match its uniqness or driveability. I always said the 550i with the sport package is the hottest 5 next to the M5. Bangle is what BMW needed and he has brought so much popularity to BMW through his work he has done there. Now if they dont make the 10 cylinder M5 again that will be a instant collectors items for BMW fans around the world. that car pretty much has the power to backup its unique and very aggressive styling. I think the bangle era has produced classics IMO........

Absolutely. Just like the previous 5 series. A 540i sport in a 6-speed is a highly sought after vehicle. Now a 525i that is a 2003, purchased only because of price point.
So, the 550i with the m-sport package will be a sought after vehicle down the road, not so much a 525i or a 528i. Mainly the 2008-2010 models will be the vehicles sought after because of the refresh of the styling.

Jeezus...they weren't that bad...give me a break! I happen to like the previous 5 series...can't stand the new one though. Can't get use to the front end design...looks like an old man with no teeth and his mouth is wide open

Yes your comment is completly true and I also admire Bangle design now people talk a lot of bad things about him but not me, He is a genius for me and all brands mimic the BMW design specially the trunk and lateral line,I have a 5 series and you never see again anything like this anymore , was a very revolutionary design complete and out of everything. The new 5 is something wrong with the front part, the lateral view of the frontal bumper is not good too , I think they can do something much better than this, and the new 5 design is conservative and more passive than agressive like the prevoius.
Now BMW has problem ith the design od the front part like 5 GT ,new 5 series, new 7 series ia about the form and angles of the grille, the new Z4 is perfect and the 3 series coupe is perfect too.

I have to see the vehicle in person to make the judgement. We cant make a full opinion on something we havent seen in person. Just like the new M3. A lot of people didnt like it and when they see it on the street now, their eyes light up.

Agreed 001.
Sold my 07 S600 and bought the space gray M3 vert you see in the hood.
Its that good.
The design of the M5/08 550 is the best and think it could be timeless. Cant believe I said that about a Bangle car.

Yes is true Bangle cars must be timeless you never see something like this anymore. All Brands follow in every movement. I am agree with you too. The Bangle 7 series is like a spacecraft very unique but people talk a lots negative things about it. Not me.
I am agree this the Bangle design at all.

Bangle saved bmw, I love the designs, I'm scared which direction they are heading in now, their current concepts are already diluting the design.

Is complete true Bnagle brake rules and create a new way to see and follow , BMW always going ahead ready to challenge the risk and the result was great, some people said negative thing aout Bangle not me I understand his job perfectly and I love it. Lines of the 7,5,3,Z4 change all brands design that ussually are waiting to copy from originals. Now I don't know will see. Is true that the interior quality is 100 percent better and design is also great.

If the San Diego BMW Club Concourse events are any indication, most if not all on display have been pre-Bangle. He may have brought in a lot of new BMW buyers, but he alienated the base. And they're the ones who are the collectors.

I too like the LCI 5's and 3's, but the neu 5 is the one to get.

I cant believe you put the word Aztek and BMW in the same sentence 001! Shame on you! I cant think of any BMW in history that is worth calling "hideous".

(Well actually, the only BMW worth putting in the same sentence as the Aztek is the still wierd X6 to me)

The E60 M5 will definitely be remembered. First and Last 5.0l V10, 507hp, amazing handling, 7 speed M-DKG transmission, M power button. I think it's the best looking 5 ever. I would be surprised if the new M5 changes my mind.

They are already forgotten. And I wouldn't use blasting us with content on BMW, more like inundated, drowned, overwhelmed. You know, terms that do not show gratitude or appreciation. For me I've been scouring other places looking for more information on the 2012 Ford Focus hatch. Here I saw I think one small article and a snippet about best cars of the show where 90% of the article was spent praising a concept Audi and what features we would see on future models off that concept. Meanwhile again, the Focus in 2012 is real, you can touch it, drive it, and buy one. Yet I see hardly any information, lame.

I completely agree about what you are saying and I think the 2012 Focus is going to eb a great vehicle. However, talking about the new 5 series, we will see it in the streets in 3 months, not 2012 like the Focus. So it is relative news.

BMW only sells a tick over 200,000 cars a year in the USA...why in God's name is every other freaking article about BMW's on this site? Clearly the other 10 million cars here are sold to people who like other cars better!

The new 5 series looks great and will be a winner. But, the lighter, more distinctive predecessor will become a classic - just maybe, the best car ever. I'm not letting go of mine.

The "Bangle Era" is a dark chapter in BMW's design history, and in time, it will be viewed as just another one of their "quirks," like their horizontally-opposed, wide-as-a-truck, two-cylinder motorcycle engines (R-series).

If we are to be honest with ourselves, they are NOT the *ugliest* of designs. They are unattractive to the masses, and doubly disappointing because they come from BMW. We just expect more from BMW because... well... they're BMW.

Virtually nothing made today will be a classic. This is just the cold reality of things. In the 4-door sedan category, the only one that comes to mind is the Quatroporto. The last classic BMWs would probably be the Z8 and perhaps the quirky M Coupe.

I don't believe that ugly cars ever become classics. Bangle-era cars are on the cheap right now. Its the pre-Bangle cars that are commanding a better than expected price.
