PEDAL GATE UPDATE: Ford Halts Production Of Chinese Delivery Vans That Use Toyota Spec Accelerator Pedals

Ford has initiated a stop work order on a full-size van because it uses the same gas pedal believed to be the cause of sudden, uncontrolled acceleration in several Toyota models.  Roughly 1,600 Ford Transit Classic diesel vehicles for the Chinese market have been assembled since production began in December.

Production was frozen on the Transit Classic, which is built by a joint venture with Jiangling Motors Co.  The van's accelerator, sourced by Indiana-based firm CTS Corp., is a part alleged to be the leading factor in 20 deaths and 2,000 complaints in Toyota vehicles dating back to 2005.

Listen closely. The recalled pedal is built by the Indiana based company CTS.

The exact same pedal built by Japan based Denso has no problems.

BTW, CTS also makes highend volume and tone controls for guitars.

is that a reply to my comment?

-EL34 I hear ya, but were you aware the some of the European cars recalled for the same issue, are equipped with Denso pedals? No clue why but it is confusing to say the least.

009, is the pedal for Europe the one built by CTS or Denso?

All I know is Indiana is closer to Europe than Japan.

My mistake, it appears the Denso pedal assembly is different but probaly interchangeable with the CTS.

Even if CTS built a defective part shouldn't Toyota have caught it on inspection? Was the CTS part built to Toyota spec but still failed?

Lots of questions here before we start pointing fingers.

it takes certain conditions (dampness) and TIME (~38,000 miles worth) for the defective build to manifest itself.

@XYZZ: Isnt that what "product testing" is for?

if you knew anything about statistical quality control, "normal" testing would not have uncovered this fault.

say you have 5 defective pedals per thousand. the chances of the tested samples INCLUDING a defective one is very small. whether the testing included damp conditions is also doubtful; most just go thru a repetitive cycle test.

this among other reasons, is why toyota always preferred working with suppliers they've shared a KNOWN history for quality.

compare the actual number of complaints, vs. the units installed. as with all PRECAUTIONARY recalls, there is only the POTENTIAL for failure. not an indication/admittance that EVERY UNIT WILL fail.

further, even the faulty units may not by itself CAUSE crashes. the critical factor may be a driver MASHING the gas down.

the chances of ANY toyota owner being killed is far less than his/her being just RUN DOWN in a sidewalk. toyota is merely being overly cautious.

The Chinese send us contaminated drywall and food products. We send them trucks that will smash into the Great Wall. I think a covert war has begun. Can we send those trucks to the Taliban?
