2011 Bmw X6 will receive single turbo N55 engine
For the BMW X6, the German carmaker will be replacing its twin-turbo N54 inline-six in this sport utility with the new twin-scroll single turbo N55 mill, just like it did in the new 5-Series.

According to BMW’s official statement with regards to this vehicle, this move is in line with the company’s drive to simplify its engine options while also providing X6 owners with stronger acceleration and increased efficiency. BMW claims that the N55 matches the twin-scroll N54’s power numbers while also cutting weight from the engine bay. Every pound lost is certainly a good thing as this crossover weighs in at a hefty 4,900 pounds.

I just read a hard-to-obtain 100-page BMW PDF document that describes the new N55 in complete detail. It is probably the best 6-cylinder engine on the planet. Unknown to most dealer sales people, the in-line configuration with cross-plane crankshaft is an inherently well balanced design. Moreover the N55 has an aluminum crankcase made from a die casting and is fitted with durable cast iron cylinder liners, a proper timing chain instead of a less reliable and less durable timing belt, an aluminum oil pan that won't rust out like a steel one, oil spray cooling of piston crowns and many other technical features that lesser cars cannot afford to provide in a competitive market.

My only complaint is that BMW brochures sell this engine short by failing to publish its strong points. Also, BMW brochures do not use the internal engine designation N55 to advise which engine is in which vehicle so I can only hope that the 2011 X6 really is getting the N55 engine as Autospies reports. My other complaint is that BMW brochures do not state exactly what all those alleged 20 power adjustments are on the so-called optional comfort seats. I have not eet found a BMW salesman who can show me in writing the exact details of this seat, nor have I been able to count up to 20 adjustments after tabulating hearsay from these salesmen.
