Volkswagen planning R version of upcoming Jetta
As part of efforts to appeal to a younger group of customers, Volkswagen is considering producing an R version of its upcoming sixth-generation Jetta at its Puebla factory in Mexico.

This new model to its US lineup is a worthy addition to a number of image-leading performance models. It is likely that the new four-door sedan will be previewed at the SEMA Show in November. It has been designed to compete against the Japanese and European performance models such as the Honda Civic Si and BMW 128i. In spite of being production ready I have serious doubts about VW giving the USA a coupe. They are so concerned about ruffling the feathers of their precious GTI that they have lost all courage to experiment. This is what happend with the Scirocco. Although technically a "hatchback" it looks quite a bit different then a GTI. It's nose is tighter with a smaller grill,it has quite an agressive racy profile, and its got those bulging fender flares due to it's wider rear track. Finally it costs no more to produce then the Eos as it is made at the same factory in Portugal on the same platform. The fact that this platform is shared would help bring down production costs. But VW insists due to the dollar/euro relationship it is too expensive to bring over. This is an aurgument I'm not convinced holds water. Because VW's sales have not been as successful in the US as in Europe VW is taking the cautious approach here. Let's build the "Americanized" VW to compete with Toyota and Honda and Hyundai. Since the USA likes 4 door sedans lets only sell those because thats the "bread and butter" of products the average consumer buys. Well VW would you like to know a secret? Those companies (with the exception of Toyota currently but soon to change)sell coupes as well. So your missing out on additional sales. So for once be brave! Take the leap and offer us Americans a sporting coupe. If the CC concept at the Detroit auto show is any indication you may have a winner on your hands.

A Jetta R would be an excellent addition to the VW range in the US
