After Toyota Recalls Tally 7.7 Million Vehicles, NHTSA Considers Tougher And More Urgent Recall Rules
Safety advocates say government regulators may take a more urgent and tougher position on recalls, following Toyota's callback of millions of vehicles.

Automakers have often resisted recalls, acting only when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is poised to order them. At other times, they have fought them off completely or argued to scale them back.

But after Toyota's two recalls linked to sudden acceleration -- 5.4 million vehicles linked to floor mats and 2.3 million to sticky gas pedals -- things may change for good for NHTSA as well as for the automakers.

It is clear that toyota was slow to react and in all probability tried to stave off the recall the best they could. I think tougher rules are necessary for companies like toyota that do not put customer safety as a priority.

I would have expected any major company to be slow. Typically they all need to be prodded before they issue any recall, since even a minor one costs a lot of money.

May be a better question is did the NHTSA buy into the perfection myth as well, and didn't want to believe what was happening?

Volunteering recall?

So, by your logic, is then somebody going to prison in handcuffs also going volunteeringly, because he is walking by himself and not carried by the officers?

You are to funny to be true badgewhore. Catch a wake up.

Please Badge, don´t be cross with me.

The analogy was meant in terms of what can be viewed as voluntarily and what not, and not in terms of Toyota is as guilty as a prisoner.

Uhm, the fact that you still don´t accept that there is a problem in the cars with the damn gas pedal (and therefore the recall is not voluntarily) worries me a bit of how clear your perception of reality is.

Enough said.
