WTF! Transportation Secretary Recommends Owners Of Recalled Cars To Stop Driving Them
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is telling owners of recalled Toyota's to stop driving the vehicles and get them fixed.

LaHood's warning came Wednesday in testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation. LaHood says his advice to owners is to "stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it."

Toyota's most recent recall in the United States affects 2.3 million vehicles with the potential for sticking gas pedals.

Gotta love big brother! Give billions to bail out the Automakers and then tell owners of the competition to stop driving theirs!

That is definitely on the minds of a lot of people, myself included. I do think a problem exists, but I don't know if it is necessary to preculde people from driving them.

GOOD! Gets these out-of-control missiles off of my commute. The last thing anyone needs is to be a part of a fireball caused by a Toyota or Lexus slamming into them at 100mph. (Just becuase a lot of people who post on this site make their living from Toyota is not a valid arguement to endanger the driving public). So Toyota has fallen off of their little perch, so fncking what! I don't care that they won't make as many billions off of us by selling their over-hyped junk to us. They wanted to be the biggest and most profitable car company and they took risks and now they get face the consequences. I am not anti-toyota, in fact I would rather have them than any Korean cars here on our soil, but they made their own bed - so nitie, nite!

Wow, a day i agree with 009. LaHood is acting irresponsibly in this. put a sock in him or tell him to hit the road (maybe in an avalon, hehe)

In all fairness, it appears the trans. secretary was really just asking drivers to take cars to Toyota for repairs immediately. There will be an article posted shortly, I am sure :)

I wonder if it were GM if everything would be this publicized?

You mean the families of the folks who died because there weren't recalls, I believe.

Can someone show me proof that Toyota's gas pedal sticks? I'm not talking about the floor mats (which have been taken care of).

LACMANLACMAN - 2/3/2010 2:08:32 PM

Floor mats were never an issue and the pedals are no longer the issue because Toyota's with the previous pedal design are reporting problems. Now its supposedly the programing of Toyota's software/drive-by-wire system?!?! What exactly is it?

Oh well, Im no longer keeping up with this story. None of my family nor friends own a Toyota/Lexus. Whatever it is I hope Toyota rebounds, the issue is resolved, and there are no more tragic incidents related to it.

LaHood Backtracks: If In Doubt, Go To A Dealer
Transportation Secretary Said He Made A 'Misstatement' After Telling Owners To 'Stop Driving'

009, feel free to make this article referenced above it's own thread.

Read the WSJ (Wall Street Journal). Article today shed light on the fact that the new Tundra being built back in 06 for the 2007 model year in Texas had a type of plastic used on the pedals to create a little friction in the DBW (Drive By Wire), so the feel was more real and responsive. This plastic was shown to have the potential to stick, especially when the heater was on and condensation formed. Toyota let it slide with a lot of models, then even tried a different type of plastic which also showed the same results.

Basically the fault seems to be that the DBW system sucks, thank god I have an 05 Matrix with a good ol fashioned cable.

ugh..so tired of this conversation...I feel bad when anybody dies or is injured in a car acciedent. BUT i drive EVERY DAY from Orange County to Los Angeles. I can tell you that I see more idiot, stupid, selfish and dangerous moves by people driving Toyotas and Lexus vehicles than any other brand. THIS should be the conversation. Yes..I realize that Toyota dominates over other brands in California..but the fact remains...a higher PERCENTAGE of Toyota/Lexus drivers drive like idiots compared the percentage of other brand drivers.. I am not talking about speeding..I am talking about left lane huggging a speeds below the flow of traffic, then cutting all the exit lane, Prius drivers alone in the carpool lane going so slow that others finally have to cut out of the carpool lane on the double yellow to go around them then cut back into the carpool lane, driving with blinkers on, driving with sun visors down when it is dusk or raining, on and on and on..right down to bad parking jobs in parking lots. Anybody who does not notice this "pheonomonon" among Toyota/Lexus drivers (with the possible exception of the IS driver)is not paying attention or in denial. So to me, the drivers are also suspect to some degree. I realize Toyota can not say it..but somebody needs to say it. Just like Audi with the 5000..this was later proved to be DRIVER ERROR. Go ahead..de-bost me, flame me...but keep your eyes open from now on and you will see what I am talking about.

We are talking about Nineteen "Throttle Failures" out of how many Hundreds of Thousands of Vehicles?

How can a Highway Patrolman not know to put the car in neutral and turn off the engine?

You have to push the button in and hold it for several seconds to manually tun it off.

IF you are in a car with random acceleration..put the car in neutral...apply brakes (either pedal or emergency)...not a difficult procedure.

Heaven forbid you don't know how to DRIVE...sorry operate a vehicle. :-)

I'm an ass...i know this...ask a stupid question, you'll get a stupid answer.
