Quick Poll: Are The Feds Applying Undue Scrutiny Upon Toyota?
Toyota has been under a lot of pressure over the last few months.  So much so, that we are witnessing some Federal officials in full panic mode. Even recommending owners to stop driving "potentially flawed" vehicles.

Many of these are the same officials that wholeheartedly dumped billions of dollars of YOUR tax dollars into bailing out the American automakers in the first place.

I find it a bit odd these educated officials would ever recommend to the public to stop using ANYTHING which such minimal evidence at their disposal. But it has already happened.

Remember this could have EASILY have happened to anyone, not just Toyota so the real issues are:

Are the Feds just simply running crazy, with a witch hunt?

Is there a hidden agenda?

Or is all of this attention finally warranted?

Please take the quick poll below and feel free to leave comments:

1UAW - When are you applying to work at the new Hyundai Plant? I heard their benefit package is awesome too.

The fact that you cling to this "20 deaths" stat is proof of the weakness of your argument. If you want to say Toyota is arrogant, I'm with you. If you want to say Toyota's actions are moronic, I'm down. If you want to say that Toyota hides problems from consumer, I'll agree.

However, when all you can say is "20 deaths," despite this article from Car and Driver that shows that number is irrelevant:

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car/10q1/toyota_recall_scandal_media_circus_and_stupid_drivers-editorial

then you have lost. The poll above, btw, shows that most people here agree Toyota is being targeted for political reasons. Must be you and your UAW cronies loading LaHood's lip, eh?

No they are not. Toyota/Lexus needs to get their crap together before more people get hurt.

Yes, they are applying too much pressure. Other than the faulty floor mats there isn't anything else that proves that Toyota's gas pedals sticks. Toyota has already fixed the floor mat issue. This is just a witch-hunt, plain and simple.

Where have you been living...under the floor mat of your Lexus?

I voted undecided. I can see no, since Toyota isn't even putting out a straight answer as to what the problem is, and I can see yes because it isn't like the govt/media to attack this viciously.

I agree with you, but the main problem is how Toyota handled it. They've obviously tried to hide the problem under the carpet (or the floormat) and it was obviously wrong.

Now that the medias are aware they have something to hide, they are digging. As for the govt, I don't buy that conspiracy theory, govt agencies are doing their work, business as usual, it's just getting more attention because it's the big story right now.

"As for the govt, I don't buy that conspiracy theory, govt agencies are doing their work, business as usual"

The belief that it's business as usual is at the root of the conspiracy theory, of course. Since it's easier to see when they're doing their job than when they aren't, we're never quite sure how evenhandedly it's being done. For many people, myself included, the government's stake in the domestic auto industry is a sufficient conflict of interest to make their impartiality very questionable.

Allevier if that is the case than why would the US government also loan foreign automakers billions?

First of all, we're talking about Toyota, not all foreign automakers. So, if you have some information that suggests that the government's stake in Toyota exceeds or equals that in Chrysler, GM, and the rest then I'll agree there may be no conflict of interest. Keep in mind, also, that in referring to "stake" I mean everything: ownership, money lent, political interest, etc.

I think Toyota pushed this one off way too far. And if there wasn't that trajic accident in CA, then they still wouldn't of stepped up to the plate.

The short term, this is going to be a huge mess for them. In the long term, I think everything will be fine. Ford eventually recovered from the firestone recall, and Toyota can too. People forget after awhile, and thats been proven time after time.

Even Audi recovered from their "unintended acceleration" issue, which was due to club foot Americans! It too shall pass. Every company needs to get slapped down every once in a while. Forces them to either improve or file BK.

I think that Toyota has been handled with kid gloves up until the past few weeks. Any of the Big 3 would have been crucified in the media months ago. But now the media tastes blood and its not going to stop until the carcass is picked clean. The frenzy isn't going to end anytime soon (e.g. Prius brakes).

We're talking about the Feds, not the media. The media will cover anything from Kim Kardashian's armored ride to Zac Efron's unmanly choice of convertible.

Notice how GM offered $1k rebate to Toyota owners for them to buy a GM product? Toyota would have to offer atleast $7500 to put a deal together for somebody with a 700 beacon score......lol!

As a consumer, I don't think NHTSA is screwing Toyota. As a Toyota shareholder, I can see the point about overly zealous comment from LaHood. Having said that, I don't appreciate the fact that NHTSA had to fly to Japan to talk to Toyota HQ and then to have Toyota spin their corrective action as voluntary (as opposed to having been convinced by NHTSA that their US operation is not reacting as they should). As a shareholder, I wish Toyota could have tackled the problem as an opportunity to show its difference from the rest of the auto pack. Just my take.

Do you actually read any of the articles that get posted on this site badgwhore? Or do you simply like making things up?

Because if you were reading them you would know that this wasn't a volunteer recall, again, I'll bring up the mom asking you to clean your room comparison. If you have to be asked, then no it wasn't voluntary.

If you have a major public relations problem in the US where deaths are involved, the government always steps in (for good or bad) but mre important if you can't determine the root cause of an issue and confront it openly, others will define your problem for you and guess what they're more likely than you are to spin it out of control. This has been brewing for a while, but how many press conferences with Toyota top brass have you seen over the past few months? This is no different from the Tiger issue, he could have taken the wind out of some of the media hype and rendered his mistresses' stories worthless if he had owned up on Day 1, but once the girls started coming forward things spiraled out of control.

Toyota has been having problems fir for the last ten years from sludge to rust and now this. It is deserving for them to have ti endure the scrutiny for them to get thier act together.

IMO, the Feds took too long to address this issue. It seems they "woke" up only after the CHP and his family were killed in that Lexus. Then it rose to real urgency after that family in Houston all died in their Avalon.

What really bothers me that Lexus has not been on the recall list this time around.
