BMW Introduces Joy to its Olympic Marketing Efforts
New “Story of Joy” Campaign Taps into Human Side of Brand and Provides Platform for Automaker’s Future Global Communications
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 12, 2010… BMW of North America today launched its largest brand awareness campaign in its history – “Story of Joy.” The campaign will break during the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Winter Olympic Games and continues at a pace heavy enough to make BMW the largest luxury automotive spender of the Games. “Story of Joy” will serve as the umbrella for the automaker’s global communications.
“Story of Joy” introduces a new creative aesthetic characterized by strong, colorful images often conveying people and their experiences with the subtlest of references to BMW products punctuated by various three-word headlines leading off with “Joy Is…”

Commoners won't understand the second video, but it can still capture their attention. BMW has a great lineup; I give my gratitude to Chris Bangle - if only he stayed... or at least return to the auto world as a chief designer of another automaker.

Age old axiom - "sell benefits" - so, it's long overdue. BMWs can be a joy to drive.

Though I do enjoy their cars, my last visit to a dealer (two weeks ago) left me very disappointed. One of the sales managers met me only after wandering around for about 15 minutes, then when I asked about the 335d he said he'd get me his "expert" sales man to show me. My first 3 questions to this "expert" were met with "um, I'll have to look that up". He immediately pushed for a test drive (didn't even ask for a license). On the test drive he showed me over and over the acceleration (full throttle) and braking on a car with only 40 miles on it (break in period anyone?). As soon as we got back he wanted to talk numbers. When I told him not right now, his tone quickly turned and he tried to get rid of me very quick. It felt extremely desperate and like all he was trying to do was a sell a car. Though I do love BMW's and their performance, the reception from the dealer was quite a turn off.
As an aside, I went to the Mercedes dealer right after that, and though he knew I wasn't buying he spent a good hour with me showing me all of the options on the E-Class, and was telling me about timeframes, new things, etc. It was more like he was trying to build a relationship rather than sell me a car. That alone makes me more likely to return there for a car.

Sounds like the dealership/representitive is the problem, not the brand. Find another dealership or contact the sales manager and let him know about your experience and ask for another representitive. Would you stop eating at your favorite franchise restaurant because you had one bad server in one of their 300+ locations?

BMW Introduces PAIN would be my video and real life experience of owning a 2001 330Ci convertible. This ranging from all the things that went Kaput and broke on the car to the service boy telling me my spark plugs had to be replaced at 60,000 instead of 100,000 miles like the service manual said! Oh it was awful compared to my 1987 Mercedes 420 SEL that lasted 14 years and 165,000 before the tranny died! I am was with BMW after only 7 years and had many more problems.

I've had cars for over 40 years and BMWs are definitely the most fun to drive..

BMW has a long way to go before they get to perfection, but the cars are great to drive and that is what really counts. Just last night, my wife was complaining about repair costs on her 328i and was saying thay maybe she wanted a Prius or a Fiesta. I said fine, let's do it if that is what you want. Took her about 10 secs to reconsider the reality of that trade and she decided that those BMW repairs weren't so bad after all.
