I have had the pleasure of testing both of these remarkable engines.. very impressed. the new V8 is a HUGE improvement over the old 4.5. But I'm still a little confused of why they are not using the 5.0 found on the FX.

Trips every four or five days to the gas station may influence some buyers. Depends alot on driving style, but V8 loves gas. Driving 535i and enjoy better driving range and lighter weight.

Both cars have better highway fuel economy; is this because of the new 7-speed transmission or is it because the engine actually has better fuel efficiency?

It is likely the transmission!

I'm impressed with the 5.6L...only 1mpg less with 420hp. That's pretty amazing.
