Audi A8 4.2 TDI SE (2010) CAR review

Audi A8 4.2 TDI SE (2010) CAR review
I didn’t realize Audi was doing a long-wheelbase A4. Is there no niche left unexplored?

A4? This is the new 2010 Audi A8, Ingolstadt’s technological flagship, a limo built around a supercar-style aluminium spaceframe and boasting the sort of toys that would make Inspector Gadget envious (and owners thankful that Lucas doesn’t do Audi’s electrics).

But it’s an easy mistake to make. The old Audi A8 looked expensive, had real presence and could easily be recognised as a cut above the rest of Audi’s cars. The new A8 though, while low and sleeker than either the BMW 7-series or Mercedes S-class, is blandly handsome and looks far too much like a £22k A4.

So what’s the new Audi A8 like to drive?

We drove the 4.2 TDI, a favourite from the last A8 range but now fortified with an extra 111lb ft of torque thanks to a higher 200-bar injection pressure. It’s an incredible unit – massively powerful (345bhp, 590lb ft) and capable of teleporting the A8 to 62mph in a silly 5.5sec, yet it's still 24% more economical than its predecessor.

But even with all of that performance on tap, the A8 just isn’t that exciting to drive. It’s less nose-heavy than before, and better resists understeer, but will almost always wash out front-first, despite the transmission’s rear bias.

Of course most drivers won’t ever notice or care that a 7-series’ rear-drive chassis is more rewarding in extremis – the A8 counters with superb traction and handling that will never punish mistakes. But even they might be disappointed by the steering. It’s either limp and uninspired in normal mode or ludicrously heavy in sport mode when the ordinarily compliant ride becomes crashy and brittle.

But it’s a limo not a supercar. Does it have the requisite luxury feel?

In response to feedback from Asia, the Middle East and the US, the new A8 is 75mm longer, 55mm wider and, despite appearances to the contrary, 16mm taller. But while the extra length benefits rear legroom, the sloping roofline does impinge on hat space and the 500-litre boot is substantially smaller than the equivalent Merc’s.

No complaints about the quality though, for this is a stunning cabin. It doesn’t break new ground in terms of design, and lacks the full TFT displays of the S-class and new Jaguar XJ, but conveys a sporting flavour its rivals’ lack. And no one does interior lighting as well as Audi.
Verdict

The latest A8 impresses with its tech-heavy spec sheet and a fabulous interior, but looks too ordinary and doesn’t drive well enough to best its rivals in this sector. It’s a good limo, but BMW and Mercedes do a better job.

I'm waiting to see one of these on the road, or at least in a color other than the ugly greenish gray from all of Audi's press photos. But unless it looks substantially better in the flesh (and I'm really hoping it does), I'll take an S550 4MATIC or 750 xDrive (especially with AMG or M-Sport packages respectively), or even a Jag XJ -- compared to those three the new A8 just looks so... "blah". And this is coming from someone who was very excited to see the new A8 and really liked the last generation model. Very underwhelmed.

I was struck by how huge this car is at Chicago Auto Show and than felt it looked dreadfully dull with small, bland wheels, I was definitely disappointed after liking the media photos with those 20's.

The new Audi A8 has been universally praised by all other reviews. Despite the fact that it simply looks like a larger A4, this new A8 packs the technology, luxury, driving dynamics, and price that will enable it to make huge strides in the U.S. market as well as globally.

Audi has a real stunner on its hands here. Look for the A8 to be a huge reason why Audi continues to grow faster than BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus both in the United States and globally.

car magazine is one of the major mags...you would want a good review from them.

the verdict-

"The latest A8 impresses with its tech-heavy spec sheet and a fabulous interior, but looks too ordinary and doesn’t drive well enough to best its rivals in this sector. It’s a good limo, but BMW and Mercedes do a better job."

CAR magazine is joke when it comes to Audi. They are the most anti-Audi of all the CAR magazines. They get a kickback from BMW AG. It is very common to read several positive reviews of an Audi in other magazine, but CAR will always put down the Audi in its typical patronizing manner everytime it reviews an Audi. Their is no journalistic integrity with CAR.

I thought the design looked weak too- until I saw a pic of it in black....

All I can say is WOW.

The new A8 in black can be viewed at fourtitude.com. The A8 is the headline article- go to it, go all the way to the bottom and click on photo gallery. Then click on "other photos shot on location" to view the black A8.......

CAR Magazine is the only magazine to give the Audi A8 a subpar review.

Check all the other major publications such as MotorTrend, Car and Driver, Road and Track, Automobile Magazine, AutoExpress, AutoCar etc..they all give the Audi A8 glowing praise and say it's a huge step forward for Audi and easily as good, if not better than Mercedes' S-class and BMW's 7-series.

One bad review is not going to do anything. Let's wait for the comparison tests to do the talking....

I don't think 4 stars out of 5 means it's a negative review. Car magazine(one of my favourite) liked new A8. I absolutely agree with what they said regarding design. It looks too much like an A4 which is not bad design but a flagship should not look too much like an entry level model.

its saying its not a bad car, but BMW and Mercedes still do a better job in this class with the 7 and S.......its still not a class leader in otherwords. In my opinion like other Audis its mission is conflicted, it doesnt know what it wants to be and misses on both marks. Lexus though not my thing gets it right because they know a lexus is, as does BMW and Mercedes. Audis dont have lexus soft rides or quiet cabins, they dont have the solid feel of a mercedes and ultimately cant match BMW on its performance/luxury compromise. This engine though it amazing, they should put it in an A5 or A6

Exactly what i was thinkng.

Hell, the 2010 S 550 4Matic {Petrol} requires 5.1secs to get to 62mph.

So .4 sec penalty and probably Double the MPG to counter the accel penalty.

I agree this would be perfect as a performance engine in the big A8 it still gets good gas mileage and to 60 in 5.5 seconds in a smaller lighter car that engine would be amazing. In an A5 it would probably do sub 5 second times while getting great gas mileage that sounds like a car the competition doesnt have why not bring something like that to the states with the new 8 speed transmission......
