Documents Reveal Toyota Was Concerned Flex Fuels Mandate Could Cost Them $600 Million
Toyota Motor Corp. executives worried last summer about what it perceived as an emerging uneven playing field in the United States, and said new fuel requirements could cost it up to $600 million annually.

The concerns were included in the release by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee of what appears to be the complete, 28-page version of a now infamous memo prepared for the company's new North American president Yoshi Inaba in July 2009 -- on his second day on the job.

All flex fuel requires is an upgraded fuel system that doesn't decompose when exposed to ethanol. And a couple extra lines of code in the ecu. I don't see how this could cost $200-$300 per vehicle, especially with costs spread across all those millions of vehicles.

Upgraded fuel system and recoding the ecu sounds like it could add up to that amount to me.

You think using slightly higher quality fuel lines and a couple lines of code costs $200-$300?

These aren't modifications. These would be in how the vehicle is built in the first place.

It adds up if you use fuzzy math.

Obama is trying to destroy Toyota so that he'll have less competition for Obama Motors.

Yah, Obama helped design the faulty gas pedal and braking system. He even penned some of incriminating emails showing Toyota put dollars above safety.
He's quite the genius..

actually, the FlexyFoolsFraud was originally the idea of farm state LOBBYISTS as a way to further subsidize farmers, with an outlet for surplus corn.

the NET energy (supposed) savings, considering fertilizer, fuel, transportation, etc. etc. means that it is actually GREENER TO NOT USE ethanol. unless the farms and distilleries are right next door to the pumps.

News no doubt from the Detroit Press...
A lot of this is just BS. The US Federal Government has always put a price tag on human life to decide if various safety programs should be implemented. It is an everyday task at the US DOT. Nothing new and nothing political, just a cold hard calculation. All aircraft and automotive companies do this type of number crunching.

The US is now promoting a fuel formulation that is not something used in high performance cars in Europe or Japan, so there will be an added cost. Toyota estimated the cost a $200-$400 per vehicle. We are basically using a version of gas associated with the third world.

Toyota is just an easy target with a foreign face for a Congress and Executive branch that have no clue on where our country is headed.

"E85 is almost useless, just look at the mileage drop at www.fueleconomy.gov and see that it's almost worthless."

well e85 is:

1. cleaner burning.
2. more renewable than standard gasoline.
3. provides more american jobs than crude oil based gasoline.
4. the profits dose not support terrorism.

Yea I can see how it is pretty usless (sarcasim)

forgot to mention that it's cheaper and cleaner to produce then oil is. remember the Exxon Valdez issue and other major oil spills that destryed the land and decimated wild life.
