Mercedes-Benz confirms the launch of its first diesel-electric hybrid later this year
Mercedes-Benz’ E300 BlueTec hybrid, the carmaker’s first ever diesel-electric hybrid car, will soon be launched. Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the hybrid will arrive at European showrooms early in 2011.

Powering the BlueTec is a specially tuned twin-turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine from the E250 CDI. Mercedes-Benz claims that the car is capable of more than 56mpg.

Nice, this is what many people were waiting to see. BUT, I thought the reason diesel hybrids were not practical was because the diesel is most effective during slow starts which overlaps with the hybrid's strategy.

Maybe the hybrid starts from a stop and at 10MPH the diesel kicks in.

now this is a brilliant car. finally!

torque, efficiency, a half century of proven long-term diesel durability. please bring it to the states!

ignorant people ALWAYS get funny when intelligent folks talk common sense to them, blowing their illusions out of the blue sky.

diesel vs. gas > premium cost
diesel vs. gas > additional WEIGHT
hybrid battery pack > yet more WEIGHT
electric motor > even more WEIGHT, + cost
electric motor = low rpm torque = REDUNDANCY w/diesel
cleanest modern diesels > still emit CANCER CAUSING particulates

for all the 'supposed disadvantages' diesel fans flung at Hybrids, a DIESEL hybrid takes and COMPOUNDS THEM.

smart.

special to turbospidey-- a 'great' example of german 'genius!' is someone going to get a nobel prize for this? LOL!

and maybe you need to have a WHITE MAN at your side, so you can find the RIGHT PLACE to post your mumblings.

oh yeah, nearly forgot. CHINESE invented the marine compass too.

chinese always were and ARE clever.

how else do you explain their evolutionary success? there are more OVERSEAS chinese than nearly any other national group. add to that, the few billion chinese IN CHINA ITSELF.

THAT, is biological/evolutionary success. how many germans are there? not even as many as japanese, as you yourself noted.

you always bring up nobel prize winners. as if THAT has ANY significance to a nation's or culture's overall success. one might equally ask, how many olympic medalists in Running are there from all of europe, vs. all of africa? NO relevance at all to economic success.

add all the overseas chinese, and i'm sure the number will = 2 billion.

and that's STILL NOT counting all of the Polynesian nations, all descended from chinese genes.

OR the native populations of BOTH americas who came over the Bering Land Bridge. now all called native-americans, but genetically from china/siberia.

and those populations used to be counted in the TENS of MILLIONS, before evil white people genocidally reduced their numbers.

so now you BLAME TOYUOTA for MB copying them?

and you do yet another, copy and paste because you have trouble thinking for yourself? i can rip into ANY source you quote, as well as your own weak thoughts.

"Such a convergence is based more on customer perception triggered by very clever marketing ...than on pure rationale scientific arguments and may result in the need for any manufacturer operating in the USA to have a hybrid electric vehicle in its model range in order to survive."

and attaining the HIGHEST fuel efficiencies with the LEAST air and hydrocarbon pollution rates, is NOT a "scientific argument" for hybrids?

of course, that the source comes from:

http://puregreencars.com/.....French-Researchers-Published-ATTACK-on-Hybrid-Cars.html

means we can take this OPINION as totally objective and "scientific!"

ROFL!

xyzz did you just brush off a reference attacking a subject because it was attacking a subject??? lol! Maybe they are attacking it because they believe and have proof that supports their argument?

well, just show us the "proof."

all i saw was an OPINION. and CLAIMS to scientific reasons, with NO substance.

Interesting move. Can´t wait to see real numbers (price tag, mpg)!

Definitely worth a test drive once it is available.
