Rumor: 2012 Buick Regal GS might be offered without the all-wheel drive system

As you may know already GM is woking hard on the 2012 Buick Regal GS, which will be based on the Regal GS Concept, unveiled back in January at the Detroit Auto Show but also on the all-wheel drive Opel Insignia OPC.

Now here is the bad news… Apparently, the upcoming car will be offered without the all-wheel drive system. This was confirmed by Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman who said that the produc planners are debating whether all-wheel drive is worth the added weight and cost.

I wouldn't necessarily consider this bad news. If dropping the AWD system will keep the cost and weight down, and thus make the Regal GS see the light of day, then fine. Perhaps this is a marketting strategy. In a year or two when things settle down, come out with an AWD GNX coupe version with about 300hp and there's a guaranteed winner right there.

Why not just make AWD an option for the car? Those that want it can pay for it and get the weight/economy penalty.

AWD 'needs' to be at least an option for the Regal GS. Again this vehicle is targeted for the enthusiasts who want a true sports sedan, not one in name only. With the 6spd manual being offered with the 220 hp turbo version of the Regal, those who only want FWD can choose that one. Without an AWD version, Buick will lose the momentum/potential sales already generated by the Regal GS thus far. Also if Buick already offers AWD for the new Lacrosse, it makes no sense to not offer it for what Buick claims as their new 'sports' sedan.....Attn BUICK - Please don't disappoint....give me the AWD Regal GS and I'll have my checkbook ready when it's time to order!!!!

Considering the let down by Cadillac and the XTS (not being RWD based), dont count on your AWD Regal GS...

On second thought, I shouldnt say that. Im just being a hater. I hope they (GM) can @ least deliver on this one...
