2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG receives new 5.5-litre V8

2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG receives new 5.5-litre V8
As we told you back in December in this post, AMG revealed its new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine, which will make its debut in the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG starting this summer.

This new engine replaces the 6.2-litre V8, and promises to deliver more power as well as an improved fuel consumption. With a total output of 537bhp produced at 5500rpm, the new powerplant shows also a power increase comparing it to the 518bhp at 6800rpm in the 6.2-litre V8. Due to the fact that it is supercharged, also the torque is even more impressive: 590lb ft of torque between 2000 and 4500rpm comparing it to 464lb ft at 5200rpm produced in the current engine.

They better call it the S55 AMG. Calling it an S63 when it has a 5.5L liter engine is just lame. That is far lamer than the current S63 actually having a 6.2L engine.

well... it could be... it's just unlikely that it is.

The mileage of the new engine is around 26-27 mpg highway, compared to the current 19.6 mpg.
Nice! AMG power with 20/27 hopefully.

Hmmmm.............makes me wonder with all that much power and torque (especially with the perf package) if the S65 will be killed off.....

I think there will always be a place for the big/bad boy V12 for customers who want the ultimate super luxo sedan.

"Expect to see a turbocharged V8 from Lexus soon as they follow suit"

Just like Mercedes followed BMW. Lexus didn't follow suit and made a very unique engine from BMWs and Mercedes by going naturally aspirated and high revving route.

Lexus have 550BHP 9500rpm V10 which is a much superior engine and there is good chance V10 of Lexus(in GS-F) will go head to head against this new 5.5 TT V8 of Mercedes(E AMG, which better also get major rear end redesign) in the near future.

BTW new engine from Mercedes seems very good and i also agree it shouldn't be called 63AMG now.

Isn't the LF-A's engine producing 480hp or am I wrong?

I agree with Jugnu about the Mercedes E rear design. I do like alternating colors (red-white-red) but even the shape is too generic (not just reminiscent of other makes).

You are wrong. LFA produces 552BHP.

But Pitiful amounts of Low Rev Torque, which is what is needed with these Very Heavy Sedans.

Why do you think MB went back to Turbo Charging ?

Even with 537-574 horsepower, there is NO gas guzzler tax - No need for a V12 - No torque issues on the current 6.2 (63) - a No brainer from MB.
