Who Says Green Has To Be Boring? AMG Releases Details Of Smaller Twin Turbo 5.5 Liter V8 Cranking Out 537HP.

AMG has revealed a new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine, which will be available in the Mercedes S63 AMG from this summer.

Despite having a smaller capacity than the 6.2-litre V8 it replaces, the new unit, codenamed M157, produces more power and more torque and promises improved fuel efficiency.

A total of 537bhp is produced at 5500rpm (versus 518bhp at 6800rpm in the 6.2 V8) and 590lb ft of torque is also on offer between 2000 and 4500rpm, which is considerably more than the 464lb ft at 5200rpm produced in the current engine.

Hopefully, the new engine really works out for them this time...
I'd say everything about his merc is boring, joining the bandwagon is another predictable, boring strategy by this...hmmmm
Bet them calling it the greenest turbocharged V8 engine in its class or whatever to impress some high school kids.

Yeah, an AMG with the 6.2 is so boring to drive. I get more excitement out of a Honda Civic DX because it revs to like 15,000 RPM...

Willis was being sarcastic....lol no one can take a joke.
High school kids? They're mostly only dreaming whether they can get a Yaris with a 1.8 L engine for their next car.

What do you guys think they should rename their AMG engines as?

AMG 55 like before?

I am not sure, I finally came around to getting accustomed to the 63...Plus numerically speaking 63 is higher than 55, so wont it seem like they're moving backwards?

Let's sincere hope that it really makes a Prius obsolete. With all the dangerous Toyotas roaming on the public streets of America, I am concerned for the safety of those Mer drivers whose lives and their precious vehicles might sustain fatal, irreparable damages upon frontal collision with a Prius that is equipped with a deadly accelerator pedal. Maybe the Mer would make these engines without a wastegate that will cause the engine to explode or a harmonic balancer that springs out of the engine grille as a counter measure, upon impact with a Prius. Innovative...!

On a side note, recently received a recall letter from Mer to repair their defective Harmonic Balancer on my 1998 W210 that decided to move out of its place six years ago. Took them long enough to figure out their POS design.

Correction: it was eight years ago, not six years ago ( couple of months after my warranty expired), when the harmonic balancer decided to move out of its home and destroyed everything in its path on the freeway.

BMWRU: The new AMG engine If it is 537 Hp, does not impress me at all. I am an MB fan but numbers are in the side of BMW with the V8 TT 4.8 so I think for now that BMW have the lead. I´ll have to wait to see more information but for me right now BMW is better. Regarding the previous BMW engines (again for me) all were happy reving weak engines, specialy the M3 engine which with 4.0 liters still 2 kilograms heavier than the spectacular AMG 6.2 and more than 100Hp less than the AMG star. Now BMW is starting to create real powerful engines, I hope they are so reliable as the MB engines are. In my personal expirience those engines are wonderful but the forseen future could bring us a new king.

Buddy, 537hp is a lot, and the engine produces 590lb-ft of torque. Benz could easily tune that engine to produce a lot more power than they are initially releasing it with -- it's going to make them competitive for a long time. Case in point, they already announced a performance package that ups the engine to 563hp and 664lb-ft of torque. And since someone has already tuned the X6 M to 650hp and 610lb-ft, I am sure someone will get that AMG engine to ridiculous figures.

As for BMW, happy revving weak engines? Seriously? The 3.2L I6, 4.0L V8, and 5.0L V10 have all won award after award, and the new M3 has been called "the worlds greatest all-around car" by several car magazines. You know who produces engines with similar character to those happy revving weak engines? Ferrari. BMW's in pretty good company there. If it wasn't for the expense of building those engines for cars that don't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (like a Ferrari), BMW would still be using them. They offered a taste of an exotic car, a glimpse into something most people will never even sit in, in a (somewhat) affordable car. And I for one am going to miss those happy revving weak engines, because they were as close to a Ferrari as I'm likely to get.

It'll be interesting to see how many 6.3 AMG will still be on the road after four years? How many 1999 E55 do you still see roaming on the road today? Reliable? No. It's just my personal experience. In terms of horsepower, you you can not tell unless you really put the two on a dyno and compare them side by side. Otherwise, Mer always inflate their hp in my experience.

Well everybody speak by xperience....I have great experience with MB, but still I am willing to go with another brand if they offer something better.....Here in my country MB is one of the best, and you see several old MB on streets cause they are good reliable cars.
