BMW Moves Out Of The Doldrums Up 16.3% In February - Mini Up 1.6%
BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) increased its February sales 13.7 percent selling 17,971 vehicles compared to the same month in 2009.  Both the BMW and MINI brands improved performance with BMW reporting a sales increase of 16.3 percent to 15,100 units and MINI a 1.6 percent increase to 2,871 vehicles.

Results were driven by the excellent performance of the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle, up 75.5 percent, and the X6 increasing 97.6 percent.  In the large premium sedan segment, the BMW 7 Series has led the category for the last two months.

“It’s a positive market sign that sales for both BMW and MINI, as well as some other premium brands, continued to improve in February,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “Led by the 7 Series just one year ago, we are now beginning to renew the heart of our model line-up, and believe as we do so over the next couple of years, our market strength will continue. For example, just today we unveiled the all new BMW 5 series at the Geneva motor show and it arrives in the US in June.”

On the used car side, sales of BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles were down 9.4 percent to 8,469 vehicles versus 9,350 vehicles reported in a very strong February 2009.  Year-to-date, CPO sales were down 17.8 percent to 15,912 in the same period of 2009.

I bet if you look at the subscribers to autospies you would see it went up by exactly 16.3%. Coincidence...I think not :-)

Here is the math:

Audi: 12,726 (YTD 2010) 9,375 (YTD 2009)increase in numbers: 3,351
BMW: 28,263 (YTD 2010) 25,211 (YTD 2009)increase in numbers: 3,052
Lexus: 29,304 (YTD 2010) 27,830 (YTD 2009)increase in numbers: 1,474
Mercedes: 29,592 (YTD 2010) 24,632 (YTD 2009)increase in numbers: 4,960

Conclusions:
- All four are gaining share
- The ranking so for is 1. Mercedes (cudos!), 2. Lexus, 3. BMW, 4. Audi
- Audi is not even selling half of any of the 3 competitors
- Mercedes is gaining most in total amount
- Lexus is gaining least in total amount
- the “premium” market seems to be growing (which is a good thing for all)

I beg to differ. If we consider this market segment as Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes, below are % changes in VOLUME YTD compared to the same period last year:

Total segment: 14.75%
Audi: 35.74%
BMW: 12.11%
Lexus: 5.3%
Mercedes: 20.14%

These numbers show that Audi's volume growth is clearly outpacing the market. Mercedes is doing well. BMW is slightly lagging and Lexus is way behind.

Looking at it from a MARKET SHARE perspective, the math shows that the change in market share YTD for the four brands are as follows:

Audi +1.97%
BMW -0.67%
Lexus -2.63
Mercedes +1.33%

The math clearly shows that your statement that "all four are gaining market share" is incorrect.

JustaCar:

OK. I generally have a problem with determining the change of the total segment (which you state with 14.75%).

My conclusion was: If everybody is selling more cars YTD than last year, in a market which is still difficult at the moment in my eyes, than everybody is gaining share.

I didn’t know that the total segment (and here the segment “premium cars) grew by 14.75% so far this year. If this is the case, you are correct and according to your calculation we can assume that Audi and Mercedes are gaining share.

Wazz, your BMW global sales information is for the month of January, NOT February. BMW has not released its global sales information for the month of February. February's global sales will likely be released on March 7th or 8th.
