GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: 001 Gets Up Close And Personal With The FT-86, Watch Out 370Z/Genesis Coupe
Could this be the car that brings back Toyota's sporting side? Has there really been anything since the Supra that has stirred your soul?
I mean there was the MR2 Spyder, but I would not say that car really stirred
that
many people.
By the looks of things, it seems like the FT-86 could be the car to steal the crown for one of the best sports cars under $35,000.
Nissan's 370Z and Hyundai's Genesis Coupe have been put on alert...
What say you, Spies?
Is this what you've been waiting for?

This is one of the best things Toyota has done in a looong time but I think this car is supposed to have a small displacement 4. Not enough gunpowder to really take on the Z and Genesis.

i have liked it since the concept was introduced last year........but your right about the 4 banger and it cant weigh that much less where its going to take on the 370 or the Genesis. It would have been nice if they carried the Subaru AWD system to this with a stroked and bored 6cyl then i would say the other 2 would have something to worrry about. but 222max you are absoulutly right this is the most sporty car they made since the Supra........They tried with the solara back in the day when they sold it with a turbocharger, suspension kit and 17 inch wheels but that lasted all of 2 years and faded. I think they need to bring the supra back and use the Lexus GS engine like they did before and just give it some outstanding power.

Very curious to see how it plays out. The specs have bounced around quite a bit over the last few years. First with the Subby-source 2.0L NA, then the 2.5L NA. I'd really be interested to see the 086A Subby version with a Turbo 2.5L with the same HP as the Impreza. Wishful thinking?

With the suspected output and engine that is being used in this car, it is not competing with the Z, as the Z is in a different class. However, this could very well be a competitor to the Genesis coupe.

I wouldn't get too conclusive yet. This car is still in relatively early stages of development.
If this can put out STI-like numbers, it will be a challenger.
No one really has a solid idea of what will come out of this car.

If it delivers on its intended acceleration, it may be a winner.

I dunno, out of all the sub $35,000 sports cars it's hard to turn down a Camaro SS, it may weigh 750lbs more than this Toyota, but it'll also have over double the power.

Why is that? Isn't this thing only supposed to have 180hp? lol it'll have a hard time getting a sub 9 minute ring time.

Camaro SS hit a 8:20, which is on par with a RS6 and a e36 m3 and 2 seconds faster than the e46 m3.
And what on earth are you talking about with the 370z...
Camaro SS... 370z
0-60mph... 4.7s...5.3s
1/4mile... 12.9s...13.3s

also... how is a ft86 supposed to drift without any power? Hand brake every corner?

"You can drift a car without alot of power"
lol ya, you chop the springs so you get >5 degrees of camber and then use the handbrake in every corner.
I love how you totally neglected any of the other cars I brought up in the comparison.
Also, lol at your corvette comparison. The reason why people think the vette handles poorly is because it's overpowered and "experts" turn off the traction control only to find out how overpowered it is. The various settings of the traction control will let you push the car through the corner either at its limit, or even past it, letting it "drift" the corner at full throttle. Its active suspension even shifts some of its weight over the rear tires on launch.

before the XRS corolla and matrix were killed off, those models were only offered with stick shifts.
if they did the same on the top engine with this, they could have velcro on the bottom of the gas pedals and IT WON'T MATTER!
competent drivers only, please.
(and if the top engine is similar, it will have at least 100hp/L)

Much nicer than the LFA from the rear. This should be the new Supra, and they should have a 400hp+ turbocharged trim level. If they have that, they could steal Euro sport car sales on top of demolishing the 370Z. Who cares what the price tag is!

This car is supposed to start in the low to mid twenties. Interior quality wise it's supposed to compete with Genesis and the FWD coupes. At 200HP it cannot compete with a Z. If they put the turbo into mass production it could compete with the Z as it weighs 500 LBS less(Nissan 3200-3300 LBS/FT86 2700 LBS. That's a lot of weight difference.

Very nice, I like it a lot. Yeah it would be nice if they give it a 3.5 liter engine in the Lexus IS350 as the standard model and call it the Supra instead. And than use the 4.6 liter engine from the GS460 and tune up to 450-500 hp that would be nice.
Toyota you need to bring the Toyota Supra back. If you want other car company to take you more seriously bring the the Supra back asap.
Either way, I love the design. Hopefully, the final production model look close to this concept form.
