RUMOR: AutoSpies EXCLUSIVE, Will The Next A6 Be The First Production Audi To Get A Virtual Gauge Display?

RUMOR: AutoSpies EXCLUSIVE, Will The Next A6 Be The First Production Audi To Get A Virtual Gauge Display?
Once again, 001 has found something unique that none of the other guys are talking about.

While everyone else was staring at the A1 eTron probably thinking "oh-kay, cool another electric Audi," 001 was getting a closer look at the gauges of the latest eTron. And, they look pretty cool. Take a closer look below...

Audi describes the unit as:

"And because an innovative drive concept also calls for innovative information management, the concept car features a freely programmable instrument cluster with a virtual display surface and innovative display and operating concept."

This BEGS the question: do you think Audi should go virtual?

Chrysler Sebring head lights...need to see other angles before passing judgment. Interior solid as usual.

Of course they should go virtual, just so they can perpetuate the reputation of installing crappy electronics. The lcd and led displays in all of my ultimate machines have malfunctioning diodes causing them to fade or go away in normal 80 degree southern cal heat.

oh god, I couldn't imagine how hard this shit would be to see on a bright sunny day. Take a laptop outside and try looking at the screen if you don't know what I mean.

I can see the display on my iPhone in just about any amount of sun if the sun isn't reflecting directly into my eyes from the glossy screen. An instrument cluster is considerably more sheltered from the sun by the roof, tinted windows, and dash cowl. I don't think it'd be a big problem.

Well it's already on 2010 Land Rovers and some Jags and no one has written us to complain yet...

My 86 t-bird had a digital dash and that was hard enough to see on bright days. I don't go writing to automotive journalists about it.

Joe, you just did write to journalist about it!
;)

Wow, that's using the term "journalist" very loosely.

I don't think it will make it to the next A6. How so you ask? Well, so far the LCD's are reserved for flagship models (think S class, Range Rover, 7 series, new XJ)no mid class model has them now- not the Merc "E", nor the new 5er, XF etc. So........I just don't see the trend getting down to the mid-range........yet.

the new 5-Series cluster is the same as the 7-Series -- two real gauges, and everything else is screen.

No. You are both wrong. The 7-series and the 5-series have just a so called "black-panel" display, a much simpler construction compared to a full screen LCD instrument cluster as seen in the new Jag and Range. Only a small part of the 7-series instrument cluster is a variable LCD-display and even a smaller one in the 5-series. My own opinion: the next A6 will get the same instruments as the A8 and A7. Audi chief Stadler told in an interview, that a full LCD-screen will be seen in the next R8.

Those are amazing. But you have to wonder how they'll work in cold climate and into the sunlight
