NY/NJ Crossings To Convert To All Electronic Tolls: A Blessing OR A Curse?

NY/NJ Crossings To Convert To All Electronic Tolls: A Blessing OR A Curse?
Carscoop reports:

"The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that it will be updating its six interstate crossings "to accommodate cashless, all-electronic tolling in the future." Well, isn't it about time?

Funding of $175 million has been approved, with installation set to start by the end of 2012. Completion should take two years (let's hope they don't pull a Big Dig like Boston).

Ideally, making the electronic system cashless "would enhance regional mobility with non-stop toll operations and result in improved air quality by reducing emissions..."

so that's where the money for the most expensive tolls is going to. even the DRPA tolls between PA & NJ are less than half price of the NYNJ crossings

The gates are not around that many tolls, anymore.

Florida has high-speed tolls that can accommodate 3 lanes of traffic, along the turnpike heading to Miami; they're awesome. You can blow through them at 70mph.

Texas has them too. The toll roads in Austin either let you use a toll tag, or pay by mail, they snap your license and mail you the bill. It works even doing almost 80 through them (no speeding ticket included either).

NJ has numerous speed EZ Pass tolls also. Mostly on the Garden State Parkway. I don't understand why they haven't built them at all toll exchanges though on the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway.

Although it would be much better if they did away with the ridiculous tolls all together and instead just raise the money thru increased gas taxes.

Doesn't the GWB look amazing lit up? I think it looks better than Golden Gate. Anyhow, I digress. I think $5 each way is highway robbery. Its about time they develop the gate-less system.....although I think they'll have a high no-pay rate

11 bucks to get to Staten Island from Brooklyn on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

And, with EZ Pass you have to pay up front.

In NTTA system works similar. Just drive through. If you don't have a tag they mail you an invoice based of your plate number. Pretty painless overall.

I thought when they did this a few years ago here in the Chicago area, we were the ones behind. Whats with the talk about a gate rising? Wow, that sounds REALLY behind times! Anyway, we have the same ones that some of you are describing that cover about six lanes. Its a big bar that sits over the whole highway and you just drive as you normally would. Its called I-Pass here. How they keep up with the cars that dont have the I-Pass transponder, I have yet to figure out. The construction that we had to put up with was enough to make you want to jump off a bridge but its well worth it now that the conversions are complete.

I'm still shocked that people that live around here don't have an EZ-Pass. Even if you only come this way on occasion. Drop some money on a card for an account, it automatically refills, you never see bills. I swear when you buy a car it should come with one non-optional.

There is an idea. Build a car that has an internal EZ Pass system that is able to switch between the Sun Pass and EZ Pass and whatever else is around for prepay speed tolls.

Nothing beats the high speed EZ Pass goin to Jersey, stay way left and you can breeze through at 65.
