Motor Trend Comparo: 2010 Volkswagen GTI vs. 2010 Mazdaspeed3 vs 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart vs 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX

"These cars are pretty amazing out here," I said to MT editor-at-large Arthur St. Antoine, as we filled our hatchbacks with Chevron's premium petrol, both of us grinning from ear to ear, still relishing the comedown off adrenaline. He'd been driving the 2010 Mazdaspeed3, I'd been trailing in the 2010 Subaru WRX. From our starting point to our fuel stop 12 miles down the road, it took us all of 10 minutes. Average speed: 78 mph. That may not sound especially brisk, but on the challenging curves of our secret Sport/Utility of the Year test loop in the Santa Ynez Valley, that's a hasty clip.

I don't see how a rebadged nissan product here in the US is superior??? If you talking about luxury, they don't have the BMW or MB status. If you are talking about hp, my APR stage 1 GTI turbo engine produce 252 hp where the nissan 3.5 liter produce aroud 310.

Next, how do you know I don't track my car??? Maybe before you make a ASS-U-ME and calling people dumb, you should owned or drive these 2 cars first(which I highly doubt in the near future since you are living in your mommy's basement)before you start opening your mouth.

Oh yeah, and the out of control gas pedal happened to toyota cars, not nissan nor vw. Please again stay with the subject.

it goes to show how smarter you are making this comment. First this is a hot hatch review not an entry sports sedan nor sports coupe so I don't know why you put G37/G37x in there.

Next, old people are the one with money, not young people so I have no idea what is this comment is about.

Last, I'm financing a 30K+ 2010 GTI econohatch and my last car was a leased 08 G35xS sedan. My GTI drives much more solid going 100mph compared to the G35x. Also, the interior material, seats, and leather is almost as good as the 40k plus infiniti.

Please, next time, before you start babbling on a article please use some comment sense.

LOL! Again, Turbo only posts something where something German (or non-Asian) wins. It's fun laughing at this guy.

Kudos to VW, a great car!

I'd have to rearrange the rankings here a bit.
1) Mazdaspeed3
2) Subaru WRX
3) VW GTI
4) Mitsubishi Lance Sportback Ralliart (a very very distant 4th)

Mitsubishi:
I could have found a better car to throw in the competition than the Mitsubishi. It BASES at 28k! When it first popped on the scene I went to the website to price one out, wow! I quickly jumped off the page and went somewhere else cause it is out of range. And when they got the price above 30k in the article I was stunned. Once you hit the 30-35k range you are in a different territory. And no manual in a sporty hatchback? FAIL.

VW
While I have respect for the looks of the GTI and it's modest performance, it is still pushing itself into high price territory. With that said the majority of owners do not leave these cars stock so performance is typically upped a bit after purchase. I would personally opt for a pre-owned R32, still the best looking VW hatch I have ever seen. I am not surprised by MT's choice, unfortunately most shoppers in this market for performance hatches would probably opt somewhere else or settle for the lesser Golf. VW just has way to many optional items that can kill your enthusiasm.

Subaru
Always a contender, AWD to boot that gives you that extra bit in the nasty weather we get up here in New England at least. My peeve with the WRX is the fugliness. The front end is all wrong and the taillights are a poor attempt at boy-racer LED styling. If I could only navigate Subaru's website without getting lost or confused. Opting for a hatchback is $500 and you don't even get a picture of it with paint, it's just an option like adding a CD changer. Other than that I'd wait for an update or redesign before looking at the WRX again.

Mazda
What I love is that the price is DOB accurate for the segment and the target market. There are tons of standard options, and it would take you a lot clicking online to get the price over 30k with all the available add-ons. What I hate is that teh engine is not really changed from the first generation MS3. When it was being worked on for a new design rumors soared about a 300hp AWD beast. AWD was a big point for people as the statements in the article point that this car could use this type of system. It would not have been difficult to offer such a system in the car, 300hp or not. The price would have been upped and the weight. But you would have still been under 30k base and be very competitive with the other AWD'ers in the segment. Other than that and the big smile up front, I'm a fan of the MS3. It needs more color options so in that respect I would opt for a plain 3 hatch in Grand Touring trim loaded with Pearl White.

It seems like you are a big fan of torque steer. For that reason alone I would have put the WRX ahead of the Mazda. The problem is the WRX is as you say "Fugly". The Mazda is "swoopy" ugly and I can't stand the "happy face". Why do I think of the horror movie with the doll when I look at the Mazda. Nope the GTI does it for me. No torque steer, high quality interior materials, crisp design and very tunable.

If the GTI was as powerful as the other three, trust me there would be torque steer.

The Infiniti, while a nice car in it's own right, is still just a fancy Nissan, so don't fool yourself thinking its a luxury car.

The Golf is an econohatch, but its got more in depth engineering than any infiniti. I'd rather have a well engineered german hatch than a re-badged Nissan with leather seats. Any day.

The GTI is leagues ahead of the other cars in the test and I love reading about all the people who complain they 'don't get it'.

If they take the time to spend with each model, and evaluate them for more than a 5 min blast around the block, the GTI is the car which you would actually want to live with day in and day out.

Some people will never get this, and I hope they are happy with their Scions/Infinitis etc.
