The Spies Want YOU To Pick Your Top 5 'OLD MAN' Cars

The Spies Want YOU To Pick Your Top 5 'OLD MAN' Cars
I won't say the brand or model I was test driving today but a friend (35-40 years old) in my neighborhood told me that it's rare that he sees me driving an 'OLD MAN' car.

Well in his eyes, today I was.

Now the car I was driving certainly skews more towards older people but only because it is so expensive.

So it started me thinking, what are the cars we see on the road today that people would call 'OLD MAN' cars?

Of course, let's only stereotype cars that cost above $30k and carry a prestige label.

OK AutoSpies readers, pick your 'Top 5' OLD MAN cars...Make AND Models please.

And ONLY cars 2008 or newer.

Most benzes are old man cars simply because of their extremly conservative styling, and high prices... so with that stated, my top 5 are.

C-class
E-class
Lincoln Town Car
Lexus LS
Pt Cruiser

sigh... Lexus, I guess, "but only because it is so expensive."
Thanks for the initial help, 001.

Of course Lexus vehicles aren't ridiculously expensive, except for the LFA, but I'm just saying.

- Lexus fan :(

Yay aha

What do you think of my 98 LS 400 and 03 LX 470? Both were just facelifted when purchased and received a GPS in the update... if that makes any difference.

Amen! This post reminds me of when I was teenager, when the peer mindset was so focused on what others thought of you -- You're not a man if you don't drive a stick, "girl cars", "girl colors" for cars. Oh my god.. what if someone revs their engine at a light and you can't take the? Oh, the shame! It's a very juvenile sense of "self", which we hopefully outgrow as we mature.

"Mercedes S series excluding the S63, S600 and S65"

Eh, you do realize that the people who tend to buy these cars are rather OLDER than YOUNGER, don't you?

S600 is about prestige all the way and will appeal to older affluent buyers (old money). S63 and S65 AMG are still bought by older buyers. Perhaps the youngest buyers of these two AMG S-Classes are going to be in their mid 40s, early 50s.

4. BMW station wagon (Noooo... it's a "touring" car -- Old man in denial)
5. Any of the generic, boring sedans made by *lots* of manufacturers. Nobody owns this market.

arguably the most ideal car that defines and suits the needs of old men, or those who appear to look decades older than they really are, or those who are going through a phase of mid life crisis that need to drive something that appears to be somewhat of a luxury four-wheel...

BMWRU: I cant imagine how bad it was your expirience with your 3 previous benzs...but for you learned to hate them....ja..ja.I do remeber My BMW lemon but honestly, The best way to know it a car is good or bad is searching on internet. As recommendation to everybody, when you decide to buy a car...Search info in forums and internet, most of the bad comments that I read about Mercs are related with appeareance or design. How ever when I do a search for problem with BMW it is more frecuent to find info about mechanical or electrical problems, and read a lot of search. Finaly, I do not think that a car define a person or character, if not, is very likely that I would be thinking that all BMW owners are pretenders. MB in fact is the main Yardstick for Luxury, in the way that Porsche is the Yardstick for Sport cars.
As a final List, there are a few new cars "now", that I consider old men cars:
5GT
NEW 5 series Wagon
Infinity (any)
X6
Honda CrossTour.

this isn't the list for affluent soccer mom cars, this is the list for old man cars. Infiniti... really? I don't know many old men who would put up with the coarse V6 and harsh ride of a G37.

BMW's are predominantly purchased by younger people? A MYTH.

I remember a statistic from Germany that mentioned the average age of all BMW and Mercedes drivers in the country. If I recall correctly Mercedes was 54 whereas BMW was 57.

SteveSteve - 3/14/2010 5:32:25 PM

The stats I recall is that th average BMW driver is 10 years younger than the average Mercedes driver, but the average MB driver is more affluent. BMW *is* aiming at a younger, sport-oriented crowd than MB, for sure. This is well documented, and well understood in the industry.

WillisWillis - 3/14/2010 6:08:25 PM

It might depend on the market/country. Older people generally have the purchasing power to afford an Audi, Benz or BMW. All these brands have cars that appeal to younger buyers to.

(*) - indicates a car that is equally appealing to younger buyers.
Mercury Grand Marquis
Buick Lucerne
Lincoln Town Car
Lincoln Navigator
Cadillac DTS & STS
Chrysler 300 (Especially the 300C with the retro-style red, white, and blue 'C' badge on the fender.)
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Lexus LS
Chevrolet Corvette (I like Corvettes, and it doesn't look like an old man car to me, but I see mostly older men driving them.)
Mercedes-Benz SL (Same reason as the Corvette)
Jaguar XJ8

1) Lexus ES or LS (the RX says you're a suburban Mom)
2) Mercedes S-class (E-class is pushing it)
3) Lincoln Town Car / Mercury Grand Marquis
4) Cadillac DTS or STS
5) Toyota Avalon

BTW, Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, and Challengers can also fall into this category...sure, they're sometimes driven by young (pre-family) people, but just as often, they are mid-life crisis toys.

When I lived in Germany, only old people drove BMW's and Mercedes (besides taxicabs). Most people couldn't afford to drive them. Oh, I was living in Frankfurt. Most people use public transportation there. The public transit is second to none. It also costs so much for a drivers lic.
