Is Aston Martin's Rapide The First Four-Door Coupe To Blur The Lines Between Coupe & Sedean?

Is Aston Martin's Rapide The First Four-Door Coupe To Blur The Lines Between Coupe & Sedean?
The Truth About Cars reports:

I know someone who’s been in the fashion biz most of her life. Her affinity with handsome male models is not surprising, yet her insistence–a “shush” sound accompanied by a finger on their lips–that the Eye Candy refrain from voicing their opinions definitely got me thinking. Perhaps beauty and critical thinking are two circles that rarely intersect in the Venn Diagram of life? True dat, since I can’t remember a day when Aston Martin’s historically gorgeous automobiles weren’t trampled by the performance of neighboring Jaguars or the German and Italian marques. And with the Rapide sedan, we have another stunning Aston Martin to admire. Shush!!!

The Rapide is certainly a looker. The roofline moves at illegal speeds, thanks to greenhouse’s acres of tumblehome and the muscular haunches of the rear fenders’ leading edge. Sure, the Rapide is a hunkering, swaggering affair. But unlike the earth-hugging wedge of William Town’s 1976
Aston Martin Lagonda, the Rapide isn’t a serious re-think of the traditional luxury sedan: it’s a Dachshund-ized DB9 with a significantly wider rear track. No surprise then, that the Rapide so closely resembles the coupe there’s almost no difference from the front or rear....

No. If it has 4 doors it is a sedan. If it has 2 doors it is a coupe or convertible.

91z4me - I completely agree with you. While the Rapide comes close in looks it is still a sedan. 4 door coupe is right up there with jumbo shrimp, an oxymoron that car companies feed to practical men that pine for the days when they drove true coupes like the 928, 635csi, etc.

"In reality, a coupe is strictly defined by its interior volume or space. Distinctions between a coupe and a sedan has little to do with doors and are made clear by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which standardizes definitions of the different types of cars on the market. Measurements of a coupe and a sedan are as follows:

Coupe equals less than 33 cubic feet (.934 cubic m).
Sedan is equal to or greater than 33 cubic feet.

Thus a coupe and sedan can be determined by volume alone rather than being determined by number of doors. A two-door car with a larger than 33 cubic foot volume or interior space is essentially a two-door sedan. Likewise, a four-door car with less than a 33 cubic foot volume is a four-door coupe.

Nevertheless, many manufacturers call a car a coupe when they want to evoke a sportier concept for the car. They may include the name coupe in the car, though technically what you are really buying is a sedan. The Cadillac Coupe de Ville is a classic example of what is really a two-door sedan. So it can get difficult to determine the differences between a coupe and a sedan when the word coupe is added to the name of the car.

Some people mistakenly think a coupe and a sedan are differentiated by whether the car has a hatchback rear. While it is true that many coupes have a hatchback opening, usually called a three-door car, not all do. Some have the traditional trunk. Further, there are four-door coupes with a hatchback, but additionally there are four-door sedans with a hatchback, which are more properly called station wagons or simply wagons.

It is untrue that the difference between a coupe and a sedan can be made by counting the number of seats. Some define coupes as having merely front seats, and possibly a removable back seat. Actually coupes can have two rows of seats or one. In contrast, the sedan always has two rows of seats, but the distinction between a coupe and a sedan can’t be made here because of the variation of rows of seats in the coupe.

The best bet is to stick with the car’s interior volume, when differentiating between a coupe and a sedan, rather than worrying about what the car is named. When choosing a car it may matter little what it is called. Usually what does matter is the car’s performance, space for passengers, and ease of use, rather than whether a car is a coupe or a sedan."

I agree. This design is soooooooo much better than Porsche.. I love most of the porsche designs however they sure missed the boat on their 4 door..great work Aston Martin. This is a car someone would lust after and Porsche 4 door is something to laugh at.

Seriously 00R, firstly, spell check your articles, Sedaen is not a word. And NO it is not the first car to do this, the Mercedes CLS has been on the market as a four door coupe for a long time. Even VW has a version of this style of ride. Seriously, what a poorly thought out post. Autospies is getting more disappointing by the post

Its not really a sedan, the backseats are little more than extra baggage space, not a car you want to be driven in but a car you want to drive yourself, luxury sedans at that price range are generally chaffeur driven.

Better buy the coupe version.
