As Predicited: San Diego Runanway Prius Story Starting To Unravel
A federal probe into a Toyota Prius that took a wild ride on a San Diego County freeway last week is casting doubt on the driver's account of uncontrollable acceleration, a spokesman for a Southern California congressman said Sunday.

James Sikes called 911 during the incident and said the gas pedal in his blue 2008 Prius was stuck, causing the car to speed along Interstate 8 at more than 90 mph. Sikes, 61, brought the car to a stop about 20 minutes later with the coaching of a California Highway Patrol officer who pulled alongside him.

Sikes later said the car kept speeding while he was "laying on the brakes" during the March 8 ride.

From Fox News
"He also said there were no diagnostic trouble codes found in the power management computer, nor was the dashboard malfunction indicator light activated. The hybrid self-diagnostic system did show evidence of numerous, rapidly repeated on-and- off applications of both the accelerator and the brake pedals."

With the front brakes shot, the rears would have been next to show wear or overheating. With the split being more biased to the front for braking the rears would have taken up the slack. And the repeated on off of the accelerator and brake pedals. This guy was tryin to cash in and should be counter-sued by Toyota for the cost of this ridiculousness.

Everybody know clearly and I have this experience several times when I went to the dealer for x reason must all the times they told me all is fine their is not code that something fault etc, etc we can't do anything and I waste my gas and my time , now I have another way to show them when something is wrong in my car , I take a video camera and take a video of the fault , also film the display with date hour and everything and then if they refuse I just call the Supervisor because sometimes they also refuse to replace the parts etc, this is my new choice. With this guy is the same thing , good advice don't drive this car anymore for your safety, now are days they never know how to fix the cars properly they just replace the parts and that's all , because is to much electronic parts. I have a lot's of experience with my car and now I always use my NEW FLIP CAMERA is easy and a real video to show then at the dealership. Is to easy for them just say FAULT NOT DUPLICATE but not for me anymore. Everybody have to do that buy a new Flip video camera and that's all. Someday they discover wich is the real problem with Toyota cars they need to investigate deep and I hope money don't silence this investigation , because this is one thing real is about 51 people death.
Sometimes I have to the dealership several times for one thing and someday they see what happens and they finally replace the part. Maybe some day they really find where is the real problem in Toyota cars.
Just think about it.

Hardly shocking. He is a poster child for your typical Prius owner.

As with all lawsuits someone will try to cash in..... but lets not forget that over 3 dozen people lost their lives, and cars that have recived warranty work are still having troubles so this thing is a real problem to this day.

Almost all are allegedly linked to SUA, but you always conveniently forget that. Also alleged is that any cars continue to have probelms.

Given toyota's in ability to diagnose their own problems I don't think they are qualified to make this judgement!

And even if sikes is making this up it does not discount the fact that now hundreds of people all over the world are having problems with unintended acceleration with toyotas of all models

As far as I know, he is not suing Toyota / asking for any monetary compensation.

That is because he filed bankruptcy and lost his other car. His comments were I don't want to sue Toyota I would just like another car. Sure since his lease ends in two months and he and his wife will be left without a car or the credit or cash to get another one. His wifes car was repoed about a year back.

One other culprit besides Toyota is CTS the American Supplier of those faulty gas pedal units. Most likely later, the spot light will focus in on the qaulity of parts some of these Suppliers are putting out these days. Man's greed is getting him way in over his head. Hope Mr. Akio Toyoda resist remaining No. 1 and fulfill his destiny and return his great-grandfathers Co. to the greatness it deserves. Most Toyota loyalist are not even phased by this whole mess, even though we are aware this is a serious problem, nevertheless they will come back with some great all out fun to drive cars over the next few years.

Wrong! There is a high proportion of unintended acceleration cases that do not involve the CTS pedal. Get your facts straight!

is there something stopping these people either depressing the clutch (if manual) or popping our of drive into neutral (if auto). Either option surely would prevent any kind of drive going to the wheels... Have people forgotten the basics of how to drive?

"Have people forgotten the basics of how to drive?"

In a nutshell...yes. Common sense has flown out the window in this country. Otherwise how do you explain all the idiotic driving behaviors people possess these days. Driving at night with no headlights on, or only the DRL's on. I see this just about every night. How can people possibly not tell that their headlights aren't on in total darkness? People who fail to signal. Driver's who drive in the fast lane on a empty highway driving 10miles under the speed limit, and when you are flying up right behind them, they still fail to change into the right hand lane. Which according to the law, is the lane you are supposed to be in if you are not passing.

Only one phrase says it all ..."NO COMMON SENSE".

"NO COMMON SENSE".

Also goes double for Mr. Sikes.

Over 20 minutes and up to 94MPH and he couldn't figure out how to stop a car? Too scared to pop the car into neutral? Too scared to shift down to a lower gear? Couldn't depress the start/stop button for 3 seconds?

no common sense...wait a minute people. How can you be expected to put a runaway car in nuetral when you are on the phone and texting and eating a cheeseburger with a coke in the other hand?? Please...

He was told by the 911 operator to put his car in neutral for over 20 minutes. He kept refusing, because he knew that putting the car into neutral would ruin is egregious plan. He's not suing only because his scam was thoroughly discovered.

He should be countered-sue by Toyota. Do not give him a new car when his lease is up in 2 months for free. This guy filed for bankruptcy to get rid of more than $700,000 of debt. Who do you think is going to pay that amount for him? That's right. We tax-payers will.

Well, I'll at least give him an E for effort, and also proving that a Prius is capable of going faster than 65.
