BMW Announces Pricing For The 2011 BMW 5-Series, Are Options Going To Jack Its Price Up TOO High?
BMWBlog reports:

BMW has announced pricing for the all-new 2011 BMW 535i and 550i Sedans. Including $875 Destination & Handling, the new 535i Sedan will start at $50,475, and the V-8 powered 550i will start at $60,575. The 535i receives BMW’s newest 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline, while the 550i will be powered by BMW’s reverse-flow 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Both will feature the new 8-speed automatic transmission.  Inspite of enhancements such as these, the base-prices for both models are lower than their 2010 predecessors. The 535i and 550i continue a tradition that is the hallmark of the ultimate driving machine – the option of a manual transmission, in this case a six-speed.  The option of a manual transmission has been a 5 Series tradition through all six generations since its introduction to the US 35 years ago.

As on any other BMW vehicle, BMW Ultimate Service, $0 maintenance for the first

4 years or 50,000 miles, is included.
The all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series combines a whole new look, inside and out, with new powertrain options and even more cutting-edge technology. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward...

WTF?
The article states that, even with enhancements, the base price of the 5er is lower than its 2010 counterpart.
The title of the post asks "Has it crept up too much".

Gentlemen, Gentlemen...

You're missing the point. How many people buy BASE cars?

Look at the options list: iPod adapter - $400, rear view camera - $400

Shouldn't these items be standard?

Sure it's BASE is lower but if you have to spend $10,000 in options what's it matter?

@Fitz

No kidding.

But the point is why is BMW continuing to de-content its vehicles and "lower" its price?

Take off the blinders, gentlemen.

OOR, I'm on your side. I haven't known anyone w/ BMW, including myself, didn't go for premium and sports package. Total of $5000 right there, if not counting the $1500 auto tran.

But the verdict is: there're people who either likes fake leather or is simply cheap, and BMW caters to that! :)

Agent00R

What did BMW "de-content" on the new 5er?

It would be nice if the base price was about $5k lower on both cars.

Slightly overpriced.

it's only overpriced if the market doesn't support the prices. but it does. the 5-series is the segment leader. if they charged less that would be poor business...they'd be leaving money on the table.

You can either have a fully loaded Lexus HS250H or a "base" 535i for the same price.

Still overpriced ? I don't think so.

How does $45k = $50k?

Not that I would choose the HS...

Another terrible flame article by 00R.

BMW has always had expensive option packages. This should be no surprise.

BMW is the king of the optionals. Luxury cars should come standard with some features, namely leather, HIDs, bluetooth, etc. I take time to laugh at every luxury car without leather or HIDs at the very least. You just paid $50,000 for a car that uses the same headlight tech as my Toyota, haha.

Of course that will never happen, especially on BMWs. I say it all the time, you can get a BMW at (name your base BMW price here), but your not actually getting a real BMW until you add another 10k to the price.

Guys this car is just a bit less with similar options than the out going model.

$50,475
$ 4,900 premium 2 - Navigation, rear camera, park distance control
rear sunshades, premium hi-fi sound, ipod & usb,
heated front seats, satellite radio
$ 1,800 premium 1 - leather, auto dimm mirrors, ambiance lighting
$ 2,200 sports - mulit-contour seats, sport steering wheels, 19"
wheels, shadow line trim, increase top speed
$59,375 MSRP for a 2011 BMW 535i ......

$60,795 for a similarly equipped 2010 BMW 535i.....

*** the 2011 is actually $1400 less expensive ... larger, new suspension, more equipment, better fuel economy ....

$400 for iPod adapter? Caugh... $3000 for ventilated seat alone? Oh boy, BMW is becoming Porsche.

psst ... see above. If you notice, then you will see that a similar 2011 BMW 535i is actually $1400 less.

Does anyone read anymore?

$ 4,900 premium 2 - Navigation, rear camera, park distance control
rear sunshades, premium hi-fi sound, ipod & usb,
heated front seats, satellite radio
